Next Saturday it’s our Summer Day Retreat at the Croft House in Upper Hopton! I always love hosting retreats and giving people a chance to step away from their busy lives for a day of fun and relaxation. We will start the day with a solstice-inspired yoga practice and meditation, we will enjoy a craft workshop together making summer wreaths, followed by another grounding yoga practice to finish the day.

There is already a lovely group of women booked on and only two spaces left - this is the last call to book!

I’m finalising the numbers with Hannah, our lovely retreat caterer this week. Hannah has made the lunches on all my retreat days and she always does such an amazing job (her focaccia is legendary and she makes it fresh the morning of the retreat!). She makes delicious and nutritious buffet lunches that are seasonal and packed full of colour and flavour. Here is our menu for the weekend:
* Roasted red pepper hummus with vegetable crudités
* Frittata with pesto, summer vegetables & feta
* Roasted cherry tomato & oregano focaccia
* Fresh lime, sesame & herb slaw
* Carrot, pomegranate & date bulgur wheat salad with harissa dressing & herbs
* Peach & raspberry hazelnut cake

Thursday as a self-employed Yoga and Pilates teacher.

Today began with something quite rare: a morning off. This meant a slow start, reading my book in bed with a cuppa (bliss), before heading off to, what else, a reformer class 😅

The afternoon was spent putting the finishing touches to this month's edition of Little Pockets of Calm - my monthly magazine for subscribers. Each issue is packed with things to help you find moments of calm in everyday life, from articles and reflections to yoga practices and guided meditations. This month also includes a little bit about the summer solstice, an at home spa ritual, and some kitchen ideas inspired by this month’s star ingredients. If you would like to get a copy emailed to you this weekend you can sign up here: http://bit.ly/4un6muD

In the evening it was off to Mirfield for two classes: Power Flow followed by Slow Flow. These are some of my favourite groups to teach. The people who come along each week are so kind, warm and welcoming, and there's something really special about the community that’s been created within these classes - it’s one of the big joys of teaching is seeing people become friends through Yoga.

By the end of the evening, after a day of movement, conversation and a lot of teaching, there was only one thing left to do: home, cocoa (I’m really enjoying the Ancient & Brave cocoa at the moment), my book and my bed 📚☕

My Wednesday as a self-employed Yoga and Pilates teacher.

Another early start on Wednesday for more new classes! This time it was a fusion session at Duo Pilates in Farsley, combining elements of mat and reformer Pilates. We focused on the TVA (deep core) muscles, exploring different variations of bird-dog and other core-focused exercises. Challenging, thoughtful and a lot of fun!

From there, it was time for a quick second breakfast, because I was already hungry after two classes, before heading to Cleckheaton for two more reformer classes - a mixed ability session followed by a restorative class.

Then home for lunch because, apparently, two breakfasts weren’t enough 😅

The afternoon was spent on admin, planning, replying to messages, and drinking a fair few cups of tea. Then it was time for one of my favourite yoga classes of the week over in Batley. This group has been practising with me for years now, and it's been so lovely to grow as a teacher alongside them, and finding a little community.

The day finished with a very large bowl of pasta 🍝 and a sweet slice of Baklava - because I was still hungry.

If you'd like to practise with me, I still have a couple of spaces available on my Summer Retreat Day ☀️ A day of yoga, meditation, crafting, good food, and a chance to slow down for a day. Feel free to message me if you'd like the details or read more here: https://lucyscottyoga.co.uk/portfolio/summer-retreat-day/

A little Tuesday round-up as a self-employed Yoga and Pilates teacher.

The day started early ⏰ teaching a brand new reformer class in Farsley. There’s always something exciting about teaching a new class and meeting new people.

From there it was a flying visit to the dentist (thankfully uneventful 😅), before a 1:1 session with a client I’ve been working with since January. We've been focusing on easing and strengthening the hips, and it’s been lovely to see her progress over the months.

The afternoon brought a few hours off, which meant I finally caught up on the Euphoria finale. I have... many thoughts 📺

Then it was back to teaching for the evening. First up: slow flow vinyasa, which remains one of my favourite styles to teach. Strong enough to feel energising, slow enough to create space to breathe. And then Pilates to finish the day - leg-focused, slow and controlled, with a few fiery moments thrown in for good measure ☺️

A full day of movement, conversation, learning and a little bit of television analysis. Have you seen it? What did you think?

If you would like to know more about my 1:1 sessions, you can message me. For more info on my classes, here’s my website: https://lucyscottyoga.co.uk

A little snapshot of my Monday as a self-employed Yoga and Pilates teacher 😊

Monday (and June!) started with my regular 9.30am yoga class in Birstall. It was a lovely group of familiar faces, a slow flow but still with a few giggles, and a cup of hibiscus tea afterwards (I always offer herbal tea at my classes because it adds another sensory layer to the class). This group have been with me pretty much since I started teaching my own classes and I’m so grateful that they’ve stayed with me all this time!

Then it was off to Leeds for a 1:1 yoga session with a private client. It’s nice to be able to work with people in their own home and this lovely lady has a very friendly dog who likes to show us his toys in Savasana 🐶

After that, I headed to Horsforth for my own reformer practice. I always think being a student makes me a better teacher, and I love having time to focus on my own movement too.

Then it was back home for a late lunch and some study time. After listening to her on the podcast Beyond the Reformer, I’m currently reading Samantha Wood’s Pilates for Rehabilitation. It’s written so clearly and really helping to build my understanding of movement, injury and recovery.

The day finished with a (quite warm) evening class in Mirfield. It was a slow but strong yoga flow with a focus on the hips and an extra long relaxation at the end. Perfect way to finish Monday.

Teaching, learning, practising, studying… a good and productive start to the week.

If you would like to know more about my 1:1 sessions, you can message me. For more info on my classes, here’s my website: https://lucyscottyoga.co.uk

Well that’s the first time I’ve ever sequenced a yoga class inspired by butter! 🧈

May’s book club pick was Butter by Asako Yuzuki which was a great choice because it’s a book that’s not easily defined. A book about food, about eating and cooking, but also a book about desire and manipulation, power and vulnerability, about friendship and relationships. Also about finding your own space and your own comfort 📚

We started book club with a restorative yoga practice, melting (like butter) into each pose - releasing expectations, finding space, and nourishing ourselves with kindness.

Then came biscuits inspired by all those unforgettable (for good and bad reasons) food descriptions 🍪 and cups of tea outside in the gardens enjoying the warmth of the afternoon. Some loved the book, some didn’t finish it (including me), and many of us landed somewhere in between. But that’s what made the conversation so good 😊

Tea, biscuits, books, yoga, sunshine and good company - a pretty perfect afternoon ☕🌿

Next book club is 28 June and we’re reading The Offing by Benjamin Myers, a book about our relationships with nature, the sea, the meadow, the wild and the way these elements impact our lives. Want to join us?

When I started teaching yoga, one thing I heard over and over again was: "I know I should be doing some stretching but I'm not flexible enough to start yoga" and it always made me smile - because we start yoga to become flexible, we don't need to be flexible to start.

Now that I teach Reformer Pilates, I hear something similar, like “I’d love to try it… but I think I need to get fitter first.” Why do we let our doubts stop us from trying something new?

Reformer is for building strength, confidence and body awareness - you don’t need to start already knowing what you’re doing. Some people come for strength, for mobility or recovery after an injury, a lot of people come because they spend all day at a desk and they know their body is asking for something different.

And one of my favourite things is seeing that shift from doubt to moving with more confidence happen over time. Pilates, mat and Reformer, is challenging, supportive and occasionally humbling, but it's also such a brilliant way to move and build.

I appreciate the machine can be quite nerve-wracking to start with though 😅

I’ve been teaching more reformer lately and I’m loving seeing more people discover it for themselves. You can find me at Prominence Pilates in Cleckheaton on Wednesday and Saturday mornings ✨

It’s time for my Friday wrap-up! This Friday finds me in Savasana (corpse/relaxation pose)🥱

Hasn’t it been a warm one this week - every class was a hot yoga class 🥵 but I’ve been enjoying the slower pace the heat encourages - the longer holds of poses and even longer Savasanas, really tuning into all the different senses we have in each moment.

I also had my final Yogalates training session this week. It’s been such an interesting course to do - adding to my anatomy knowledge and encouraging me to think about movement and teaching from a different perspective. I always enjoy being a student as well as a teacher ☺️ and I bought myself a little bunch of flowers as a treat for teaching my assessment class 💐

Now heading into the weekend and looking forward to book club! A good book, good company, and hopefully a little shade somewhere 📚

Wishing everyone a lovely weekend! What’s on your agenda?

One of the things I love most about teaching 1:1 sessions is how different every client and their goals can be. This week alone, private sessions have included:
🪷 a restorative practice for relaxation and stress relief
🌿 mobility work following a hip injury
🪷 learning the basics to build confidence with the goal of joining group classes
🌿 improving balance and core strength
No two sessions are ever quite the same, and getting to know each client, is exactly what makes them so rewarding to teach. 1:1 sessions allow everything to be tailored completely to the person in front of me - their body, their goals, their pace.

If you’ve ever felt nervous about joining a class, returning after injury, or simply want a practice built around you, private sessions can be such a lovely place to start.
