Accrington Road Runners

Accrington Road Runners We are a friendly & sociable running club, with around 100 members of mixed abilities. So, what brings you here then? Are you thinking about taking up running?

Perhaps you’re already a runner? Or maybe you’re just curious? Let me tell you our story. Accrington Road Runners were established in 1985, and our membership is growing each year, currently it stands at approx. 100 people, of all abilities. Throughout the year, we meet each Tuesday evening at Accrington Cricket Club, Thorneyholme Rd, BB5 6BD where there are changing and shower facilities availabl

e. Training runs begin at 6.30pm and are typically split into 4 groups of abilities, so that no-one is left struggling, or finds themselves out of their depth. Don't forget though, no one gets left behind. During the darker evenings we tend to stick to the roads, but as it gets lighter we like to venture off-road. But we always try to vary the routes. As we’re a sociable bunch, we also organise things like ‘Summer Runs’, where we run from a different location and go for some food & drink afterwards.

We are well and truly into race season now!

Last week saw the launch of the East Lancs Inter Club League, a series involving six clubs, each hosting a race throughout the summer. A huge thank you to Blackburn Road Runners for hosting the opening fixture.

We had an impressive 23 ARR runners competing, with our men's team taking first place, putting us in a great position at the start of the series. Well done to everyone who represented the club!

James McLeod continues to go from strength to strength, producing a fantastic 10km PB of 34:06 at the Cheshire 10km. An outstanding performance and a superb time! 💪🏃‍♂️

Mark Strutz completed a 70 mile Ultra Marathon which follows Hadrians Wall! The route stetches across England between Carlisle and Newcastle. What a fantastic achievement. Well done Mark 👏

Johnny and Vanessa Oldham completed the challenging Rochdale 3-Day Series which began with the 6-mile road race at Norden on Friday evening, followed by the Naden Valley multi-terrain race on Saturday, before finishing with the Knowl Hill Fell Race on Sunday. Completing three races in three days is a brilliant achievement—time to put those feet up!

At the Sabden Trail Race on Saturday, Glen, Paul G and Adrian all won their respective age categories. Congratulations to all three on excellent performances. 🥇

Josh Baynes ran the CraggRunner 5k in 19:50! First time under 20 mins. Well done Josh 👏

We also had runners representing the club at the Walsh Two Lads Fell Race and the Coppice Fell Race over the past week, continuing to fly the ARR flag across the region.

Finally, our most popular social run of the summer took place last night. Members enjoyed a more leisurely run around Haslingden before heading to Las Tapas for some well-earned food and good company.😋

Well done Team ARR!

🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️ Race season is in full swing! 🏃‍♂️🏃‍♀️

It’s been another fantastic week of racing for our members, with club vests on display across road, trail and fell events.

Today, 20 members took part in the brilliant Bradford Millennium Relay. We entered two teams, each made up of five pairs of runners, to tackle the 47-mile route following the Bradford Millennium Way. A fantastic team event with plenty of camaraderie, effort and smiles along the way.

Meanwhile, Hugo, Nick and Mel headed to Reading for the Endure24 event. Runners can compete solo, in pairs or as part of teams, completing as many laps as possible of the stunning 8km trail course within 24 hours. An incredible effort from Nick and Hugo saw them cover 100 miles between them! Mel also completed 15 miles while running with a sling – a truly amazing achievement 👏

Jess Belshaw battled strong coastal winds at the Morecambe 10K, while Anthony took on the Jubilee Bridge Half Marathon and put in another strong performance.

Over the past week, members have also been in action at the Weets Fell Race and Kelbrook Fell Race, both part of the Pendle & Burnley Grand Prix Series.

Congratulations to everyone who raced, volunteered and supported this week. It’s fantastic to see so many members out representing the club and enjoying their running. 👏💙💛
