Am I the only one? Can’t remember how to cook after 3 weeks away, on the trail eating lots of pasta and bread.

Keeping it simple to get me back on track. Eggs, egg whites, cottage cheese, chickpeas and loads of veggies - in a small pan so it’s nice and deep and finished off under the grill.

✅37g protein, ✅9g fibre, ✅390 calories

Done and dusted and the other half ready for tomorrow.

Comment ME TOO and I’ll send you the exact recipe to hit the macros.

A beautiful TMB finish spending time with and her hubby Francois.

Nyon, Geneva, Samoens, Prévessin-Moëns, and a hike in the Jura mountains after a visit to the ski chalet (how cute is that).

Cheese, cake, w**e, and lots of healthy food. It was lovely cooking and creating with Maeve and torturing Francois with all our nutrition knowledge.

Can’t wait to see her again in November at the Functional Medicine Conference in Dublin and hopefully welcome them both to Derry at some stage.

Thanks for a gorgeous few days.

❤️

TMB Last Day (yesterday). La Flegere to Les Houches.

At first we thought we’d have to take a cable car and bus to the finish. Low lying cloud and mist, rain, threat of thunder on our last day. We poured over books and maps, worked out alternative routes with options along the way and headed off on the path in the rain at 7.30am. With many twists and turns, reversing and going forward, path choices that were marked on the trail but not the map, and then vice versa lol we made it to Chamonix and walked the final 7km along the road to Les Houches.

And yes, it rained every step of the way until we reached our destination at 2.30pm. Cold, wet, tired and elated.

Delighted at the finish to meet our lovely friends Caroline and Ryan who walked the TMB in reverse (and in much less time than us lol).

A brilliant experience: 170km (150km for me because of my bug) and 10000m elevation gain. It wasn’t easy, every day brought a new challenge, a new ‘hard’, but also so much joy. It’s a gift to be able to do hard things in such glorious surroundings.

We loved it so much we may come back next year so I can do the stretch I missed when I got sick and we can do a few of the variant and alternate paths.

Day 11 TMB. Tre Le Champs (La Boerne) to La Flegere

10km
1000m gain
Didn’t track today so estimation

Everyone was in the Auberge was in flux for today’s walk. The forecast wasn’t great. It was ladders day IYKYK BUT Emma and I had decided the ladders were not for us. Avoiding them meant going a bit above and round them, more work for us and in not great weather or taking an easier lower route.

What do you think we went for?

Yip, higher and harder lol.

We really enjoyed our day of walking today. We choose not to do the ladders, nor to go to Lac Blanc because of the weather warnings, but on this path, every choice leads to a different fantastic experience. As one of Dutch friends said every day “This was the best day ever”.

Every day on the TMB is the best day ever.

Great to arrive at the famous La Flegere. Loved our wee corner bunks.

All is well

Day 10 Trient to Tre Le Champ via Col du Balme. Another “easy” day lol

14km, 7hrs
Height gain 1150m
Descent of 1010m
Heights point was 2201m at L’Aiguillette des Possettes (otherwise known as that craggy rugged ridge)

Seriously, how am I even doing this stuff.

Trient was a pretty village with a lovely pink church. We met the lovely Joan and Monica from Cork originally but now living in New Zealand and were sorry to say goodbye this morning.

Amazing climb and views up to Col du Balme (red doors in the video) for coffee and cake. After the refreshments we walked on and kept looking ahead wondering where the path would take us. “Well it’ll not be up there”, I said, pointing to a rugged craggy ridge.

Yip, craggy rugged ridge (2201m) was just where it was. That was some scary up and even scarier down. When you look ahead and see the path disappearing over the edge you just have to have faith.

This was a day of “where’s the path?”

Today’s lesson. The path always appears.

Day 9 Champex Lac to Trient. 16km, 850m elevation gain but we descended more than we climber at over 1000m. On the trail for 7 hours abut moving time less than 6 hours.

Reading other people’s descriptions of boulders, descents and a metal@walkway bolted onto a cliff wall, we weren’t sure what to expect but this was a really lovely day.

More like a walking holiday in the Swiss alps than the Mordor adventures we’ve had on previous days lol. Can’t decide which I want more of.

I’m still eating Emma’s dust on the ascents but skipping down the steep descents like a mountain goat. Glutes and quads holding out well , just gotta work on the dreaded cardio. These old knees are doing great . And every day the heights, edges and ledges terrify me less.

Can’t believe we have only 3 days left.

TMB Gite de Fouly to Champex Lac. 15km, 648m elevation gain, 771m descent.

An ‘easy’ day. I laugh when I write this. When I climb Sawel it’s a 347m elevation gain. When I climb Errigal it’s a 520m elevation gain from the car park. Oh how my interpretation of easy has changed.

But this was an easier day for us for sure. And great to have a wee but of rain. I did a lot of research and spent a few ££ on my jacket so glad to have the opportunity to wear it.

Mainly forest paths, up and down, a bit like Ness woods but hundreds of times higher and narrower paths. At one point the path was so narrow and so high we had to hold on to chains in the wall as we walked along. I kid you not.

Raining as we arrived in the pretty Champex Lac but it soon cleared up. A wee treat to have a self catering apartment with a lake view after last nights dorm room.

We are over half way through I think. I cannot believe I am doing this.

Day 7 TMB Walter Bonnati to La Fouly. 20.5km, 1000m elevation and descent of 1400m

We set off today at about 7.30am and it was what the TMB call a balcony path initially, a path that hugs the side of the hill and winds round it. Whilst it did go up and down a fair bit, I ended up at a fastish pace and somehow got way ahead of Emma(unheard off lol). Emma is a bit faster on the ascent and I am faster on the descent. Sounds like it should work BUT she waits at the top for me and I wait at the bottom for her which means we are generally a slow couple.

On this day once I was ahead, I bombed on, knowing I’d be slow on the ascent to Col Ferret (2537m). (a) I wasn’t as slow as I thought I’d be and (b) it’s amazing what a 15 minute head start can do. So I happily waited for Emma at the top and we crossed the border into Switzerland together. The descent was long but glorious.

Feeling strong, feeling happy.

Grateful to the man in our dorm who offered us the lower bunk because we were older. Did we accept? Hell yes, there are time when something you’d ordinarily be offended by is just plain fab.

TMB Our Day 6. Saturday 15th August. Courmayer to Walter Bonnati via the Mont de la Saxe variant. About 15km, 1650m elevation gain.

Spectacular views on both sides and Mont Blanc itself kept us company the whole way along the ridge walk.

My first day walking after my bug and we made really good progress up to the Refugio Bertone where we made the decision to do the high level variant via Mont de la Saxe.

Apart from it being a tough climb, it was a tough day emotionally for me. Challenging my fear of heights in such a glorious environment brought up all sorts of emotions, and I was just so glad to be recovered and to just be there.

All in all an amazing day - a bit of dancing along the way too and a wee celebratory Aperol at the end of a brilliant day.
