A FITTING WAY TO END THE SEASON…….Our traditional end of season Sunday 30/30 match away to our good friends at Meysey Hampton saw the mighty Jewels romp to a 7 wicket win with 6 overs to spare!!! A fantastic game played in near perfect conditions against a cracking opposition that was only topped by what can only be described as the cricket tea of year!!

Winning the toss an opting to field first (we knew the size of the tea coming!!) the skipper plumped for 2 of his strongest and most consistent bowlers in Riley Sanderson and Ant to look to put a stop to any attempts from the Meysey openers to get off to a quick start. A superb spell from Riley (1-6) who ensured he would finish the season as leading wicket taker in the Sanderson household, supported by strong spells from Russ Wilson (1-11), Debutants Archie (1-6) and Billy (0-7) helped to keep the score down with a steady stream of wickets falling.

The Meysey batters started to re-group with strong knocks from Astie (30 not out) and Craggers (31 not out) looking to power them to a strong score. The Jewels then fought back with some more economic bowling to try and hold them back. As it looked like they would finish on a hight score up steps young Arthur Batstone to snare 2 victims and a run out to leave himself with figures of 2-10 and restrict Mesyey to 167 from there 30 overs

Records started to tumble as the Jewels came out to bat with all 3 opening batters retiring (Ant (30), Jon Millard (30) and Billy Lloyd (31)) amongst a flurry of boundaries and the rare sight of Mr Millard running a 2!!! Clearly the Mesyey boys had to many sausage rolls and scones and some uncharacteristic misfields helped to pile on the misery for them!! A couple of quick cameos from Arthur (3) and Adam O (13) brought debutant Archie to the crease who crafted a beautiful knock of 28 not out. In support was Russ Wilson (having the game of his life) and an entertaining knock of 19 not out which included the final boundary to bring us home with 6 overs to spare. Remarkably it meant we had 5 not out batsman for the first time ever!!

Player of the match has to be Russ Wilson for not just the 19 runs, or the fact he got his first wicket for the club but an outstanding fielding display that resulted in 2 catches with the first definitely the catch of the season (even better that the skippers against the same opposition earlier in the season!).

A final shout out must be made to Carmen Daley and the team at the Crown Cirencester for supplying a wonderful traditional cricket tea for both sides to devour……..and devour it they did!!!! We were also delighted to have both Bill and Gail Daley in attendance for the match (thanks to Gail for helping to set up the tea whilst we were in the field). To all members of the Daley family, the team gives you all a huge shoutout because without your continued support the team would not be where it is today

We now look forward to our end of season awards night before we do it all again in 2027!!! 👑💎🏏

SERIES DECIDER……..GOES THE WAY OF THE MEYSEY!! That right the jewels attempt to record a series win over our good friends at Meysey Hampton ended in a narrow defeat which means they take it 2-1. A great performance all round with some outstanding knocks and a late flurry of wickets that almost turned the game the way of the Jewels but the Meysey boys held on! We look forward to our traditional end of season Sunday game against Meysey in early September where we bring a traditional cricket tea with us!!

Invited to bat first on a decent looking wicket the Jewels took advantage of unusually wayward bowling from the Meysey crew and a fast outfield to post 45 off the first 4 overs mainly down to a lightning start from Mark Whitman (25 not out) ably supported by Riley Sanderson (9). Mark retired and then in comes the machine that is Luis Walker to smash a quick fire 24. The quick start soon hit the buffers with wickets falling at regular intervals (Wayne 8, Harmon 6 (we wont talk about the reverse sweeps!) & Arthur 😎

It was left to the most unlikely of sources in the skipper (Mike Dee) trying to steer us to a half decent score. A valiant attempt ended when he was bowled on 21, with a 6 thrown in for good measure, and it was up to Jon “Boycott” Millard to try and steer the tail home. A valiant effort of 17 not out with cameos from Gearing (3) and Philpott (4) set a score of 133 for Meysey to win.

A first for the Jewels with a brother/sister combination opening the bowling which saw Izzy Sanderson snare another wicket in her debut season (1-10) whilst her brother Riley finished with 0-19. However, the Meysey batsman were starting to hit there grove and the normally reliable pairing of Walker and Philpott were brushed aside as they reached 76-1 off the first 8 overs.

Time to wheel out the big guns and none more ferocious than Wayner who had the batsman hoping around the crease for his 2 overs conceding just 6 runs. In partnership the skipper managed to take advantage of the hostile approach of Wayner to snare a couple himself (2-15) before handing over to Arthur (2-19) and Mark (2-9) who carried on in the same vein and brought us closer to an unlikely victory. Shout out to Arthur who almost bagged himself a hat-trick and post-match quickly announced that he and Mark were the Jewels own version of Anderson & Broad and should bowl together every week!!!

Sadly, the Jewels ran out of time, and the Meysey boys brought it home in the 17th over to seal the series victory. Players of the match are Riley, Izzy & Arthur for not just this match but their efforts all season. Worth noting that after this game all 3 of them are sat on 4 wickets each!!! We now move on to out last 20/20 game of the season against brand new opposition in Carps Diem on Wednesday 5th being played at Randwick Cricket Club in Stroud.

You read it right……… The Jewels have won!!!!! At long last the Jewels have recorded their second win of the season against the legends that are the Stroud Posties. Superb ground to play on and fantastic hosts who kindly donated 2 of their players to play for us (more on that later!!) to ensure we had a 11v11 match. A great team effort with 2 new debutants who both played a key role in the victory

Winning the toss, the skipper opted to bowl on a lovely track with a very inviting short boundary on one side. The posties opening batters clearly liked the look of it as they plundered the opening bowlers for 38 off the first 4 overs. The skipper threw the ball to the 2 debutants who managed to get the run rate down with some great economic spells (Matt Harmon 0-16 and Rueben Whitman 0-12) but still the wickets would not come. More economic spells from the Skipper and Mark Whitman helped to keep the score down but still no breakthroughs……………..and then it all changed!

The skipper threw one of the posties own (James Elliot) into the attack and within an instant they were 3 wickets down with 2 for James (2-12) and a great run out by Adam “the Cat” Gearing. 4 overs left to bowl and the skipper brought 4 of the Jewels finest back into the attack to clear up the tail. Instant rewards with the skipper snaring a wicket to leave him with figures of 1-11 off 3 overs and a blistering final over from Rueben saw him take 2 wickets and finish with 2-13 off 3 overs. A later flurry from the posties in the last 2 overs set the Jewels a target of 130 to win……

Up steps Mike Philpott for an aggressive start with the bat with a couple of quick boundaries on his way to 9……..but unfortunately, he managed to run out his partner at the over end with a l***y blow that got deflected onto the stumps!! That allowed us to have Luis Walker in for a quick 25 not out and superbly supported by the other Posties player (JC) who put a together a composed knock of 28. Things were looking promising and an electric cameo with the batt from Matt Harmon (11) and another dogged innings from Mark Whitman (30 not out) had us all set for victory….and still there was drama to come!! As players retired, as we got closer to the total, out strode Adam Gearing to get us over the line and he did this in exquisite style with a massive 6 off the willow of the Slaz to tie the scores level. All that was left was a tidy single and victory was ours with 20 balls to spare!!!

After so many near misses recently it was great to get that victory we all deserved. Massive shout out and thanks to the Posties team for giving us JC and James who both played major roles in our victory. Great batting performances all round but for player of the match I am going to go for Rueben as his first spell of bowling help to reduce the run rate and his final over at the end yielded 2 wickets at the expense of only 1 run!

Next up for the Jewels is a series decider away to Meysey Hampton on Wednesday 29th. 1-1 after 2 games that went down to the last ball, this is sure to be all time classic!!!!!!!!!! 👑💎🏏

New opposition………….same result!! New opposition and a new venue for the Jewels this week as we finally got to arrange a game against the Butchers arms played at the wonderful Oakridge CC ground. A game that has been 2 years in the making was played in outstanding weather but unfortunately the Jewels came up short, and we lost what was a competitive game. Played in a cracking spirit and we have already agreed 2 matches against them for 2027!!!

After winning the toss and opting to batt, the openers made a solid start with some early boundaries from the blade of Mike Philpott. A steady stream of wickets (Philpott 9, Ant, 8 and Nick Batstone 5) were met at the other end by another bludgeoning not out display from star batsmen Luis Walker (25 not out) doing all he could to help us to post a competitive score. The runs started to dry up and despite some great efforts form the middle order (Wayner & Mark Whitman with 11 each) it looked like we were heading for a score well below par. Enter Adam Gearing for some l***y blows and a rapid fire 11 to at least get us up to 106……….would it be enough!?!

For the first time in the Jewels history, we opened the bowling with 2 youth players (Riley 0-19 and Arthur 0-8) who did their best to keep the free-flowing Butchers opening batters from running away with it. Chances came and went (3 tough catches dropped) and the hope was that when they retire, we could get stuck into the middle order…..and we did. A great run out of the opening batsman was soon followed up with a wicket for Luis (1-19) to give us a glimmer of hope. Some economic but wicketless spells from Skipper Mike Dee (0-9), Wayner (0-14) and Ant (0-14) looked like leaving us with an 8-wicket defeat but a smart catch from the skipper to give Mark a wicket (1-1) and a great run out by Riley (even if he did throw to the wrong end!) meant a little bit of drama ensued before they sealed a 6 wicket victory!

Player of the match goes to Adam Gearing for an outstanding display behind the stumps and a glorious cameo with the bat. Next up sees go back to the valleys to face the Stroud Posties at Stroud CC

MATCH REPORT!

WINNER WINNER CHICKEN DINNER!!! That’s right, after many a close game the Jewels finally recorded their first victory of the season with a last ball win against our good friends at Meysey Hampton despite the weather doing its best to disrupt us!! 1-1 between us as we look forward to a 20/20 decider in July!!

Asked to bat first on a damp wicket the Jewels looked to stamp their authority early doors, but they did not count for the wily old fox that is Allan Fuller knocking over 3 of our top order to leave us teetering on 20-3! Panic!?! Not a chance when you have star batsmen like Luis Walker (32 not out) and Riley Sanderson (22) to blunt the Mesey attack. Even once they got out, up steps Adam “The Cat” Gearing and Izzy Sanderson to plunder great knocks of 15 and 6 respectively to help get us to what can be described as an even par score of 120. Shout out to Arthur as well for an entertaining knock of 12 where he got his first ever 6!!

Looking to defend a par total the Jewels opening bowlers may not have got many wickets but a combination of economic spells (L Walker 0-4, M Dee, 0-9, A Gearing 1-14) and some resolute fielding meant that after 10 overs the match was set for a close finish with Meysey looking well set to deny us once again. Who knew what carnage was about to unfold!!

A change behind the stumps brought Ant into the attack and a few teasers something magical happened!! A lovely shot from the Meysey batter looking for all the world to be a 1 bounce four was thwarted by the Skipper (M Dee) racing across the deep to snare what can only be described as “Catch of the season”. The look on the Jewels face said it all….How did he get there and how on earth did he catch it!!! Wanting to ensure the skipper did not take all the plaudits up steps Riley Sanderson with a devastating spell of 3-13 to tear the heart out of the Meysey batting line up and leave it up to his old man Wayner to seal victory in the last over. Despite a few wobbles the old boy did what he needed to do and ensured that victory was ours!!!!

Player of the match must be Riley though. Batted superbly, fielded like a gazelle, and then tore through the batting order like a hot knife through butter!! To top that he was a cigarette paper away from a hattrick as well!!!!

MATCH REPORT:

AGONY!!!!!!!! Our 3rd game of the season against our good friends at Meysey Hampton ended up in a 1 run defeat to the last ball of the match!! A unique 80-80 match of 10 8 ball overs, due to the weather doing its best to de-rail us, played in great spirits and also we got to celebrate Phil James 100th cap for Mesey Hampon…..more on that later!!

Asked to bat first, the Jewels set about trying to establish a decent score to defend on what was a damp pitch. Adam (6) & Ant (15) were tasked with opening when batting was at its toughest and laid a good foundation. In came the big hitters Luis and Ian Barber (on debut) to hit great knocks of 20 and 21 not out to give us a chance of posting a respectable total. Unfortunately, we just ran out of overs and despite a heroic knock from Riley (9) we ended up setting a target of 80 for the win.

Determined to make early inroads to the Meysey batting line up, the skipper (Mike D) got the ball rolling with figures of 2-5 in the first over which included the prize scalp of Phil “Centurion” James. Hot on the heels of the skipper came a wave of economic spells from Arthur (0-4), Russ Wilson (0-1) and Wayner (0-4). The jewels needed a wicket and up steps Izzy Sanderson to rip out the middle stump of one of Meysey’s finest to set off wild celebrations! That wicket sparked a spree of wickets tumbling with Luis (1-4) and the excellent Ian barber (1-5). Shout out to Barbs for an amazing C&B. More economic bowling from Riley (0-3) and a couple of run outs and we were set for a tense finale in the setting sun!!

Last over was drama filled occasion where a last ball 4 got the Meysey Boys across the line for a 1 run victory! Some great contribution form all the team but player of the match can only go to one person and that is Izzy Sanderson. Great bowling and what can only be described as the widest smile ever seen when she collected that wicket. I swear there was a tear in the eye of big Wayner!!!

Next week is new opposition for us in the form of Stroud Posties!! Let’s see if the Jewels can get that much deserved first victory of the season!

MATCH REPORT:

The second game of the season for the Mighty Jewels was against our good friends at the Bathurst Arms North Cerney……….and it was an absolute nailbiter!!! The game was completed with only 3 balls to play but unfortunately the Jewels lost out his time in what was a great game all round. Big shout out to the Bathurst team for a great game (played in the best of spirits) and some great hospitality afterwards back at the pub!

Losing the toss, the Jewels were put into bat and a fine opening stand between Jon Millard (18) and Mike Philpott (17) set the foundation for a decent score. A few untimely wickets left the Jewels looking at a below par score but some great knocks from Luis Walker (26 not out) and Ant Parkes (25 not out) put us back in with a chance of a decent score. A flurry of late wickets and boundaries saw the Jewels post a respectable 124……could we defend it!?!?!?!

Wickets were proving tricky to come by with some economic spells from the likes of Mike D (0-6), Ant (0-7) and Sparks (0-9) and finally some breakthroughs with Jon Millard getting his second wicket in 2 matches (1-17), Adam Gearing (1-19) and then Mike P with an excellent spell of 1-9. Shock of the day was that the Jewels finally manages to hold 2 catches!!! An outstanding instinctive catch from Adam Gearing just off the square and then the classic high one in the deep that Luis managed to snare beautifully!!

The Jewels were not done though! 2 run outs (yes, you have read this correctly) for Arthur Batstone and Carl Thomas helped to keep the Bathurst team in sight but to no avail as they just snuck over the line in the final over!

Man of the match goes to Mike Philpott for a great all-round display and a lovely bruise on his foot where he stopped a certain boundary!! Special mention to Nick “Chef” Batstone for stepping in at the last minute to make his debut and managed to plunder a few runs!!

Next up is a trip to one of oldest adversaries in Meysey Hampton CC (formally Siddington CC) on Weds 13th May, hope to see you all there!!

The Mighty Jewels kicked off their 2026 campaign with a keenly tested match against the 5-mile Inn which unfortunately ended in a defeat. On the plus side we saw the Jewels field 4 youth team players for the first time which included out first female player in Izzy Sanderson!!

After winning the toss and opting to bowl first in an ever-fading light the Jewels opening bowlers out the ball in all the right areas but on this occasion the batsmen were up to the task and started to score runs at a good rate. However up steps Tim Sanderson to remind them of our bowling potency and quickly snared a wicket (1-12) and could have had a few more. Following up that was the legend that is Jon Millard who on his Jewels debut managed to snare himself a wicket whilst bamboozling the opposition with an array of leggies!! The 5-mile boys started to look like they would be posting a formidable total but up steps big Wayner to ensure he had the family bragging right with a classic spell of hostile bowling (1-7) to restrict them to 149

Put into bat with the light setting fast a steady start from the Jewels saw wickets falling at regular intervals whilst Ant decided to up the ante and started despatching, he bowers all-round the park for a great 25 not out. Other batters get started but could not keep it going (Jon Millard 9, Tyler Sanderson 6, Arthur 5) and then Wayner decides that attack is the best form of defence with a quick fire 26 (4 boundaries in a row), It was just not enough as we were all bowled out for 92.

Special shout to Izzy Sanderson on her debut who bowled well for figures of 0-16 off her 2 overs and managing to get her first run on the board from the last ball of the match!! We go again this Wednesday away to the Bathurst at North Cerney
