Cinderford RFC

Cinderford RFC Cinderford RFC is one of England's top 80 rugby clubs and one of the highest-ranked in Gloucestershire. Sponsor: K W Bell Group Sec.

Cinderford RFC is one of the top 40 clubs in the UK and the third ranking rugby club in Gloucestershire with 3 senior teams, behind Gloucester RFC and Hartpury RFC. Cinderford's 1st XV plays its rugby in National League One, with 15 other club affiliated sides competing weekly. Cinderford RFC was formed in 1886 in the Forest of Dean a mining area in West Gloucestershire situated between the Rivers

Severn and Wye. The area, a source of iron ore and coal since pre-Roman times, also provided timber for Nelson’s navy and was seen as remote and the inhabitants as wild and unpredictable. By the turn of the twentieth century Cinderford were playing leading teams from England and South Wales but after the Great War the club’s fortunes, and the local coal mining industry declined, and many good players ‘went North’ to seek employment in the coalfields and rugby in the ‘Northern Union’. Nevertheless, A D ‘Bumps’ Carpenter gained an England Cap against South Africa in 1931. The club’s re-emergence after WW2 owes much to the efforts of the late Bob and Mary Beavis. ‘Cinderford White Rose’ a club mainly of miners, had kept rugby going over the war years. When they decided to re-form as Cinderford RFC Mary became Hon. and remained so for the next fifty years. The club started league life at level 6 and by 2001 was at level 4. Relegated after just one season Cinderford were back by 2004 and made it to Level 3 in 2007-08 after a nail-biting North/South play-off with Darlington Mowden Park. After eight seasons in National One they were relegated at the end of 2015-16. During that time budding internationalists Freddie Burns, Sam Underhill, Harry Williams and Josh Adams all gained valuable experience as dual-registered players. At the end of season 2017-18 Cinderford, captained by George Porter, regained National One status by becoming National 2 S) Champions with 143 league points from 29 wins and 1 defeat. At the end of 2021/22 season Cinderford, captained by Harry Hone, achieved fifth place in National League One its best place since gaining National One status. The 2022/23 Season

The 2022/23 coaching team is led by DOR Paul Morris and Head Coach Clive Stuart-Smith the former Gloucester, Leeds, Llanelli, Barbarians and England Saxons number-nine and Forwards Coach former Gloucester back-row player Andrew Stanley. The senior coaching team has been strengthened with Player Coaches Tim Brockett and George Boulton. Adam Farr continues as Head Physio along with his team to keep the squad healthy through the season. Harry Hone remains as Club Captain. Danny Pointon remains as United Player Coach. David Didcote remains as Stags Coach with Billy Head retained as Captain. The newly resurrected Bucks squad will be coached by Jack Gardner. Shane Ranford and Jonny Kibble head up the Mini section and the Girls section will be led by Paul Lydiard. The club’s Senior XV (1st) play in National League 1; the United (2nd) XV play in the Counties 1 Tribute Western North; and the Stags (3rd) XV play in Counties 4 Tribute Gloucestershire North leagues. The club has a full mini and junior section with age group sides Under 7s to Under 18 (Colts) and a thriving Ladies/Girls section.

🦌 CINDERFORD RFC | CLUB NEWS

Welcome to our first Club News of the new season, bringing you some of the latest news from on and off the pitch at Bell Sports & Rugby Park.

There’s plenty happening around the club already, so here’s your latest catch-up… 👇

🏉 WHAT A SATURDAY!

What a way to get rugby back underway at Bell Sports & Rugby Park!
The day started with Cinderford United kicking off their pre-season with a friendly against Old Patesians, before the 1st XV opened their National League 2 West campaign against Clifton.

And what a game that turned out to be — probably a little easier on the nerves if you were a neutral! 😅

Most importantly, it was brilliant to see Bell Sports & Rugby Park packed with people enjoying their rugby again.

A massive thank you to everyone who came through the gates, our volunteers and all those working behind the scenes who put in the hours to make matchdays like this possible.

Our thanks also go to Old Patesians and Clifton, their players, officials and travelling supporters for joining us and playing their part in a fantastic day at the club.

Two games, plenty of rugby and a great atmosphere around the ground — exactly how we like our Saturdays at Cinderford. 🙌

🍕 INVESTING IN OUR MINI & JUNIORS

Those who regularly visit Bell Sports & Rugby Park will have seen the container situated on the right at the top of pitch entrance steps..

The container will provide dedicated storage for Mini & Junior training kit and equipment, and thanks to a substantial contribution from our Rugby in the Community Partner, Domino's Pizza -Wales, South West & Wirral it will also soon carry their branding.

But this partnership is about much more than putting a logo on the side of a container.

Domino’s contribution is helping us provide a practical facility for our Mini & Junior section and is another investment in grassroots rugby and the next generation of Cinderford RFC players.

A massive thank you to Domino’s for their support and for continuing to get behind rugby in our community. 🍕🏉

And, as always, our thanks to our Together in the Community partner KW Bell Group, for their continued support of Cinderford RFC.

From United getting their pre-season underway and the 1st XV beginning their league campaign in front of a packed ground, to our Mini & Juniors, supporters, volunteers, sponsors and everyone working behind the scenes — we all have a part to play in the future of our club.

🏉 SUNDAY RUGBY — GET BEHIND OUR U16s!

The senior season might be up and running, but the next generation of Cinderford RFC are ready for their turn on the home pitch!

This Sunday our U16s welcome Bristol Saracens U16s to Bell Sports & Rugby Park, and it would be brilliant to see a good crowd on the touchline getting behind the lads.

These are the players coming through our Mini & Junior section, developing their rugby and proudly pulling on the Cinderford shirt — so come along, make some noise and give them the home support they deserve! 👏🏉

📅 Sunday 13th September
⏰ Kick-off 12:30pm
📍 Bell Sports & Rugby Park
☕ Stags Café open for refreshments

A Sunday afternoon, rugby at the Bell Sports & Rugby Park and a chance to support the future of Cinderford RFC.

Come along and get behind the lads! 🦌

🏉 FIRST GAME OF THE SEASON FOR CINDERFORD U11s

Cinderford U11s travelled to Bedwas RFC for their first game of the new season.

They faced a fantastic Bedwas side in a brilliant, closely contested game, with both teams showing some great rugby, teamwork and determination right through to the final few minutes.

A cracking way for our U11s to get their season underway with a win, with plenty of smiles and lots to take forward into the games ahead.

A big thank you to Bedwas RFC for the warm welcome and a thoroughly enjoyable morning of rugby. 🤝🏉

Well done to everyone who pulled on the Cinderford shirt and represented the club so brilliantly.

One Badge. One Community.
