Wow, wow, wow. What a day of finals at Rackenford Manor and the winners of The Mixed Doubles and Men’s Doubles trophies are all from Chulmleigh Club. Huge congratulations to Anthony Bennett and Jo Moser and Oli Hunt and Ian Reeve. Both matches went to 1 set all and were then decided on an up to 10 Championship tiebreak giving spectators an edge of the seat exciting watch. A fabulous day of tennis, chat, lunch and tea. Thank you to all of those involved in organising the tournament and to the generous owners of Rackenford Manor.

Huge congratulations to five of our club members for making it through to the Rackenford Tournament finals. Oli Hunt and Ian Reeve will be up against fellow club member Anthony Bennett and his partner Wayne in the Men’s Doubles. Anthony will have a busy day as he is also playing in the Mixed alongside partner Jo Moser. Pat Dodds has won a place in the Ladies Doubles and the Vets finals. The matches will be played on Bank Holiday Monday at Rackenford Manor. Everyone who took part and families are invited to watch so there will be plenty of support on the day. Good luck all and enjoy 🏆

Our in house Summer Tournament has been going on throughout the spring and summer. So many fun matches and if desired the occasional drink and nibble afterwards! We are all really grateful to Oli Hunt for taking the time to organising the event. It’s a great way to meet and play with other members. We now have a date set for a Finals Day. We have our finalists ready and waiting in the Ladies Doubles and Ladies Singles. Should other competitions progress and availability allow, we may have more matches on the day.

It will be Sunday 13th September, commencing at 14:30 with the Doubles, followed by the Singles.

WOW! Just had a quick peek to see how the Rackenford tennis tournament semis are shaping up and 5 Chulmleigh members have made the semi-finals of the mens. Two the mixed and one the ladies. Others still have chances in the vets. Several more Chulmleigh pairs made the quarter finals of the mixed and the ladies and were narrowly beaten in championship tiebreaks. Rackenford is a friendly social tournament played throughout the summer at several different home courts. Go Chulmleigh players look forward to watching you in the final! Lots of fun at the fair at Chulmleigh tennis club’s traditional Thursday morning fun and games. 14 children, aged 7 to 11 competed in the first session. Some had been to our regular coaching sessions and some were new to tennis, so coach Dave divided then into two groups. Blythe Foley won the first group and the sportsmanship prize went to Charlie Taylor.
In the second group they played short singles against each other. It was fabulous to see so many long rallies and winning volleys. Eva Faure-Wells played and won six matches to reach the final! Joey Millman also won all of his first round matches, bar the one he played v Eva. In an exciting final the tables turned and Joey just edged it, winning the tiebreak and claiming the Charles & Jane Rowe memorial cup.
7 teenagers rallied against each other in the older group in a mini tiebreak tournament. Both Dan East and Rudy Preece won all their round robin matches so they faced each other in an exciting final. With Dan clinching it to win the George Mortimer Chulmleigh Fair cup.
Congratulations to all the children for taking part and being such good sports, the parents for watching and joining in and helpers, Stephen, Izzy, Danielle and Jo and of course our coach Dave. I didn’t get many action shots because I was kept busy!
It was lovely to see so many of you at our stall on the sheep field during Wednesday’s fair. Thanks to our chair Stephen who manned the stall most of the day with the help of Amanda, Andy House, Andrew Harker, Carole, Nikki and Jo. Holly Moser guessed the exact number of balls in the tub! The Bagatelle competition was competitive as always. Third place Andrew Heighton, Second Sarah Chisholm - winning a bottle of wine and first place Dan East (yes the same Dan!) winning a cream tea for his parents. Thanks to the Fox and Hounds for this generous donation.
A reminder that Saturday coaching will continue during the holidays (including parent and child coaching together). And calling any parents who are daunted by six weeks of summer holidays – we have a family membership which includes children and for new members its half price! So for £40 one parent, (£70 for two) plus children have access to the courts throughout the holidays. We can lend rackets and balls to members to get you playing! See you on court soon!
