The Best Part of the Job 🏅

A massive shout out to my client Montana for absolutely smashing the Manchester Marathon! After conquering it in 2024, she’s officially gone back by doing it again for 2026!

There is nothing more rewarding for me as a trainer than when a client walks into the studio to show off their medal. Seeing that bit of hardware is the perfect reminder of why we put in the work.

While Montana handled the grueling miles and the discipline of her running plan out on the roads, we used our time in the studio to build the "tools for the job." To come back two years later and do it all over again, you need a body that is built to endure.

We’ve been focused on:

🔵 Leg Strength: Building the power and stability to keep her moving mile after mile.

🔵 Upper Body: Conditioning her to maintain posture and form when the fatigue hits late in the race.

🔵 Durability: Making sure she was strong enough to handle the training volume and stay injury-free.

Variations are essential for long-term physical development and joint longevity. During today’s session, Peter transitioned to the Sumo Deadlift—a technical variation that offers unique benefits for functional strength.

​Here is why we have integrated this variation into Peter’s program:

​🔵 Optimal Spinal Alignment: By maintaining a more vertical torso, Peter can effectively manage the load with significantly reduced shear force on the lumbar spine.

​🔵 Targeted Muscle Recruitment: The widened stance shifts the emphasis toward the glutes and adductors—the primary "powerhouse" muscles responsible for hip stability and pelvic alignment.

​🔵 Real-World Application: Training from a wider base of support directly improves lateral stability, making everyday movements and transitions feel more secure and controlled.

Ryan is wrapping up a heavy lower-body session with some serious calf isolation. After moving big weight on squats and lunges, it’s time to focus on the "stubborn" muscles that often get neglected.

Why Calf Isolation Matters:

🔵 Ankle Stability: Strong calves protect your Achilles and improve your balance during heavy compound lifts.

🔵 Power Transfer: They are the final link in the chain for explosive movements.

🔵 Symmetry: You don't want to build a massive upper frame and leave the "wheels" behind.

The Pro Setup: SSB Calf Raises

Ryan is using a Safety Squat Bar (SSB) here for a reason. Because the weight is distributed differently and the handles allow for better stability, he can focus entirely on the contraction rather than balancing the bar.

By placing a plate on the floor to elevate the balls of his feet, he’s achieving a deeper stretch at the bottom of the movement. This increased range of motion (ROM) is the secret to forcing those muscle fibers to actually grow.

The Workout Order:

🔵 Squats (Compound Power)
🔵 Lunges (Unilateral Strength)

Big shoutout to client Ryan, dialing in the details on back day. We love our heavy compound lifts (barbell rows, deadlifts), but if you rely strictly on bilateral movements, you might be leaving gains on the table.

Here's why we added Single Arm Cable Rows to the rotation:

​1️⃣ Fix Imbalances: Most of us have a dominant side. Unilateral work ensures your weaker side catches up, creating a balanced, symmetrical physique.

2️⃣ Range of Motion: A barbell stops at your stomach. With a cable, you can drive that elbow further back and get a deeper stretch at the front, maximising muscle fibre recruitment.

3️⃣ Constant Tension: Unlike dumbbells where tension drops at the bottom, cables keep the lat loaded throughout the entire rep.

​📝 TEACHING POINTS:

​Set the Base: Feet planted firmly, knees slightly bent. Use a bench for stability if needed (as seen here).

​The Cue: Drive the elbow towards the hip, don't just pull with your bicep.

​Control the Rotate: Keep your chest proud. Notice Ryan’s hand on his chest? This is a great tactile cue to ensure you aren't swinging or using momentum to move the weight.

​The Stretch: Let the shoulder blade protract (slide forward) slightly at the bottom for a full lat stretch, then retract to initiate the pull.
