Training doesn’t have to be this all or nothing thing

Neither does expecting a little more from yourself

You can dream a little bigger

Set expectations a little higher

Work a little harder

It doesn’t have to be oh I’m trying to be a world champion or I might as well not bother

Because for the vast majority of people in this sport, you not doing it for medals, or highlight reels, your doing it for you

Skill is king, there is absolutely no denying it

But how physically prepared you are lays the foundation of all that is to come

Consider your building a house….

Your physical capacity (strength, speed, endurance, movement capacity) is the foundations

Your skill is the bricks and mortar - it’s the thing that makes a house a house

But without solid foundations all that work is for nothing, as soon as abit of weather comes it all starts falling to pieces

There’s a massive difference between theoretical coaching and practical coaching

A lot of things sound great on paper but once they collide with real people in the real world they fall short

All you have to do is talk to people

Complexity doesn’t equal greater value, it often just leads to greater confusion

Strength and conditioning is less about exercise selection and more about management of output over the course of a period of time

You know these insta posts that start with
“5 exercises every combat athlete should be doing” for the most part they are absolutely meaningless

And you know why, because nobody can fu***ng agree what the best movements are

Now that doesn’t mean you throw the baby out with the bath water

Movements are a tool, a tool that puts you in the best position to facilitate adaptation based on you and the desired outcomes you want. The selection of movements simply need to be sensible to that desired outcome

There is still 100% effective exercises and there is certainly a lot of ineffective exercises, but the list on both sides is pretty extensive

Any moron with a laptop can write 4 sets of 5 front squats and sit back happy with themself

But knowing when to push, when to pull back, when to adjust and when to simply get out of the way is where the secret lies

Especially when it comes to consistent results without negative knock on effects

I’ve actually had conversations with people where they go

“I don’t know what I’m going to do without jiu jitsu”

And in my head I’m thinking - “haven’t you got two kids, could just spend more time with them”

But being injured is really tough, believe me I’ve spent more time off the mats than I have on them in the last 3 years with the same injury

It’s s**t, but you can also believe me when I say I’ve done the hard yards on these tips and they work!

If you comment the word “webinar” below I’ll send you the full video on the process I use to help clients not only survive time off the mats but thrive in it

I tried to think of a valuable lesson based on this story

But the reality of it is just every now and again we all have the ability to have a stinker

A large portion of the things that will impact our training are usually a decision making error

The choices we make day after day can have real positive impacts but also negative impacts

The food we eat, when we go to bed, how much weight we add to a bar, those extra rounds after class

Tiny things that have the ability to enhance outcomes or derail them

The goal as you develop your training both on and off the mats is not to just become a better athlete but also to develop the training maturity to make those decisions

But no matter long you’ve been doing something, no matter how much experience you have, every now and again you have to laugh and realise you’ve been an idiot

One of the biggest recommendations I can make is get really clear on the things you want when it comes to training

Because once you know what you want it’s easy to make the decisions off it

There are always going to be periods where things don’t go your way

Struggling for time, not performing well in comps, not getting better on the mats, not losing weight, plateauing in the gym

And 9/10 it’s our own bulls**t that gets in the way, and learning to navigate that bulls**t is really difficult because in the haze of everything else it can be hard to find the next step

So ask yourself these two questions:

1. Do your behaviours line up with the outcomes you want to see?

If the answer is no

2. What would the person you want to become do in this situation

By the end you’ll usually have a pretty clear picture of what the next step is
