On the course 1st-16th June

This period was very wet with 85mm(3.3"), but did settle down during the last weekend for the Centenary weekend with a few dry days and slightly warmer temperatures. This coming week looks to be going a little more unsettled again with average temperatures. Looks like we'll have to wait for the return of more summer like weather

Jobs on the course:-
▪︎ Working on greens went ahead on the 8th of June but the weather made it less than ideal. We still got to scarify the greens but had to reduce the depth from the planned 4mm deep to 2mm deep due to the wet weather. Still got to give the greens a light top dress with 6 tonne of sand
▪︎ Greens, tees and approaches have had their monthly applications of a wetting agent, seaweed and growth regulator
▪︎ Greens got a liquid feed application post scarification.
▪︎ Continue to kill off the Himalayan balsam.
▪︎ Fresh stone put on borders around clubhouse and putting green
▪︎ Put out the measured discs for the junior short course, kindly sponsored Ryan's Chartered Accountants.
▪︎ Our irrigation contractor came out to replace a burst isolation valve between the 11th green and 12th tee.
▪︎ Trim hedges at the 4th red/yellow tee and the putting green hedge

Plans for the immediate future:-
▪︎ Next working on greens is July 13th and 14th so as to get the Club Championship played prior. Also, these two days will be used to Verti-drain the fairways by a subcontractor. Once again, this will involve closing the front 9 on Monday and the back 9 on Tuesday.
▪︎ Continue spraying the Himalayan balsam.
▪︎ Continue with keeping the course cut as the growth rate is increasing.

Finally, our apprentice, Mason has left us. We wish him all the best in the future in his new venture and thank him for his efforts and great work he's done for us over the last 2 years.

On the course 19th-31st May

Very contrasting weather in this period. First week was cold and wet with 38mm of rain, the second week was extremely hot and sunny with only a thunderstorm on the night of the 27th/28th giving 5mm. As May draws to a close it gave us 109mm(4.3") and it also brought an end to the meteorological Spring of March, April and May which was again, another relatively dry Spring with only 243mm(9.5")
This next week is the start of the meteorological Summer but looks like someone forgot to tell the weather as it is looking much cooler and much more unsettled.

Jobs on the course:-
▪︎ Ditches strimmed at 4th and 7th
▪︎ Border tidied at the 1st tee
▪︎ During the wet spells we needed to empty the bunkers of water.
▪︎ As the warmer weather came the growth really kicked in and the definition on the course really started to show
▪︎ Unfortunately the warm weather suddenly woke up the meadow grass on the greens and the feed kicked in so we had excessive growth on the greens, slowing the speed down, especially as the day went on. So, we run the verti-cutters through the greens at -1mm to thin them out and lift the seed heads up so they could be cut off.
▪︎ The seed heads are a natural cycle of the annual meadow grass flowering, but can be exaggerated during times of stress for the plant.
▪︎ Following the verti-cut and application of Plantmax and Soilmax.
▪︎ A new irrigation water meter was finally fitted at the request of the Environment Agency.
▪︎ Irrigation was required on the greens and tees due to the excessive heat. Our usual of some night time automatic watering topped up with hand watering of the usual dry spots, trying to keep that moisture around the 20% mark
▪︎ The Himalayan balsam has started to show again, so the endless but important task of killing it off has started. We need to get as much as possible before it flowers and seeds formed.

Planned jobs:-
▪︎ Continue controlling the Himalayan balsam.
▪︎ Use the incoming wet spell to get a wetting agent on the greens, tees and approaches.
▪︎ Keep on top of the cutting, which in the current growth spurt, is pretty difficult, especially if it goes wet on us.
▪︎ Prepare for the next working on greens which is on the 8th June where we hope to do another scarify and top dressing weather permitting.

On the course 5th-18th May

This 2 weeks or so was pretty wet. With a dry start in first 5 days, 43mm(1.7") fell in the next 9 days. The cold temperatures also a feature of the weather. Temperatures way down on where we should be.
Forecast is for the very heavy downpours to continue but signs of something drier and much warmer is suggested from Thursday onwards.

Jobs on the course:-
▪︎ Cutting of all surfaces. Nothing too much due to the cold weather but some grasses are growing and just keeping things tidy.
▪︎ Maintenance day on greens - Greens scarified to a depth of 3mm with our new thatchmaster cassettes, followed by a cut then a top dress with 6 tonne of sand
▪︎ Post maintenance, a granular feed applied to aid recovery and Soilfix applied to to increase Calcium and and Magnesium levels.
▪︎ Used the wet weather to get a wetting agent and seaweed on the greens, tees and approaches. This will aid water into the profile and work more efficient in the water movement.

Immediate future plans:-
▪︎ With warmer temperatures coming i expect growth will kick in more aggressively so cutting will become the main priority.
▪︎ Greens height will reduce down to its summer height this week, from the current 4mm to 3.5mm. Hopefully the greens will fill in it a bit more once the annual meadow grass wakes up with the warmer temperatures.

Commemorating 100 years at Hall O'Th Hill. This fantastic double shotgun event is open to all club members - 7 and 5 day, flexi, 2nd club, junior, associate and intermediate, as long as you have an active handicap you are welcome to join in the celebration.

This event will recognise the return of the club to Hall O'Th Hill on 12th June 1926, when the official opening took place - it was postponed from the 12th May by the General Stike of 1926.

The Astley Shield, which is still played for, was presented by the Mayor of Chorley, Councillor Arnold Gillett, to mark this special occasion.

We hope the membership will look forward to joining us for this unique and memorable day.
