Abi and I had an amazing weekend climbing together at Women’s Trad Festival 2021 🧗🏻‍♀️

The weather was pretty grim but rain didn’t stop play! Our instructors were brilliant and kept us going all weekend. We climbed, we belayed, we abseiled, we learned new rope skills and practised them out on the crag 😬. We met so many inspiring women (and men who came to support us)!

This was our 2nd WTF, unfortunately we haven’t been able to do much climbing since the last one in 2019 but after this weekend we’re definitely psyched to do more again.

The reason we come here? There’s no judgement.

It doesn’t matter who you are, how old you are, whether you’ve climbed for years or never climbed before. Everyone is so friendly and supportive and it’s just the best community to spend the weekend with. A much needed boost for me and a huge inspiration for Abi to see how women who don’t know each other come together, build new friendships and have fun.

If you’ve ever thought you’d like to do something you’ve never done before, just go and give it a try. It could be incredible🌟

Huge thank you to all at for organising and hosting another successful event. Hopefully see you again next year! 😊

A full postnatal check should be standard but it’s still not happening. Please support this!

Posted • Mums everywhere - will you join us in signing a petition for better postnatal services?

We are so, so sad to read the hundreds of messages we received both on our feed and privately about the poor experiences of new mums in their 6-8 week postnatal check with their GP.

According to the ldn your GP surgery is required to offer and provide you with a postnatal check following changes made in April 2020.

▫️ You should be asked about your mental health and wellbeing.

▫️ You should be asked about vaginal discharge.

▫️ Your blood pressure should be checked.

▫️ You should be offered an examination to see if your stitches have healed if you had an episiotomy or caesarean section.

Instead, mums are feeling thoroughly let down by their GP check.

Some of the things mums have been told:

▫️ ‘Why would you need to see a women’s health physio? You can teach yourself Kegels.’

▫️ ‘The doctor scoffed at my contraceptive preference.’

▫️ ‘My check was done over the phone and was basically a tick box exercise’

▫️ ‘I was asked why my birth failed to progress.’

▫️ ‘I am 9 weeks postpartum and still haven’t had a check’.

As passionate women’s health practitioners, we cannot understand why women are being failed by our health system.

Furthermore, why is such a big deal made of contraception?

Why are mums made to feel like a failure if they haven’t had a vaginal birth?

A petition for better postnatal service for women to got just 122 signatures and was closed on February 21, 2021.

So, we are going to start another one. Do we have your support? As life-givers, you deserve more.

We are The Mummy MOT. We have helped and continue to help thousands of mums every year.

A Mummy MOT is a postnatal check from 6 weeks after vaginal and C-section birth. It includes a full postural screen, tummy gap check, and pelvic floor examination.

Our clinics in Marylebone and Chiswick are open. We are also offering online consultations.

Mums, we see you, we hear you, we are here for you.

"From challenge comes change"

Working on my fitness over these last few years has enabled me to get out there and join in the fun with my kids rather than just watch.

I'm especially proud to be an example to my daughter, Abi, and show her that she can still do all the things she enjoys when she gets older if she wants to. Anything is possible.

If you want to be more active, don't let a lack of confidence stop you. Start small so it's easier but find time to move everyday and build it up. Challenge yourself and make some changes.

Pregnancy changes your body a lot!

Your diaphragm gets pushed up and ribs spread out to make room for a growing baby.

Your pelvic floor has to handle lots of pressure.

Your abs stretch out and your back muscles overwork to make up for the lack of ab strength.

Your posture has changed from the growing baby bump, but after you've had your baby your posture may also be impacted from leaning over to feed the baby and carrying them around on your hip when they're bigger.

All the more reason to keep exercising through your pregnancy so your body can cope with all these changes, and getting the right help postpartum so you can strengthen your body again! 💪🏼

I hadn’t planned to write this post but I was just thinking how it relates to people struggling with set backs towards their health and fitness goals.

Bailey had to have surgery back in January (he ate a hair scrunchie) but since his energy came back he’s started pulling like a train again every time we go out of the front door. We had worked hard training him not to do this 😩

It’s really frustrating and means no one likes taking him out. Which is a shame because if he would walk nicely he would get taken out all the time!

I’ve tried a few things to get him to slow down but they’re not working that well so I made a quick call to our dog trainer yesterday to get some help and booked a training session in.

We were given one thing we need to practice and get right before we move on to the next. Nice and simple to get us started on the right track again. I instantly felt less stressed and frustrated!

Sometimes things don’t go to plan and you get thrown off course. You might even have to start again from the beginning.

It doesn’t matter.

What matters is that you don’t give up.

Give yourself one thing at a time to work on so you’re not overwhelmed or stressed trying to get back to where you were.

When you’ve got that first thing nailed, add the next.

Get help if you’re struggling to figure it out on your own.

CORE & PELVIC FLOOR

As soon as we're allowed to run classes indoors (hopefully by early summer) I'm going to set up a 6 week workshop in the Chorley area with the focus of helping women strengthen their core and pelvic floor.

These will be suitable for women from 6 weeks postnatal to post menopause. If you have a weak pelvic floor, this is for you - it's never too late to get yourself stronger!

Numbers will be limited to keep it personal and allow time for individual attention.

Sign up to my newsletter to be the first to get the updates and the earliest chance to get booked on to the workshop - https://www.bevmcgonaglefitness.co.uk/newsletter

Well it's finally looking like there's light at the end of the tunnel and if all goes well, I'll be able to reopen my doors on the 12th April.

3 lockdowns and restrictions for gyms hasn't made a great year for starting my new business, but I've been able to work on a few things behind the scenes in between client Zoom sessions and home schooling.

Today I've launched my new website www.bevmcgonaglefitness.co.uk which has all the info about what I do and what I offer. Go and take a look - the link is in my bio 🔝

Big thanks to Heather at Heather Capture Photography for taking the images. They're all of me thanks to COVID 🤪, but I'll add some of clients when I can see them again!

Being able to coach clients online has been great but I'm so looking forward to working with them all in-person again in my studio. What are you looking forward to most when the gyms re-open again?

My Training

Confession time - I haven’t done much proper training over the last few months. Even though I know the benefits, I just haven’t felt motivated 🤷🏻‍♀️

But we got a new Wattbike recently so I decided to re-test my performance stats and started a 12 week plan to help get my fitness back on track.

Started week 5 today and progress is going well. Heart rate recovery never left the red in the first week, but then went to yellow and now it’s started to hit the green 🚦

Tuesdays is normally the worst session - 1hr 15mins of intervals - but today it was a welcome distraction from me checking if personal training can go ahead in tier 3. The government still haven’t clarified this less than 24 hrs before the tiers come in, it’s an absolute joke!

Anyway, 8 weeks of the training plan to go and gradually increasing to 5 sessions a week - that’s enough to keep me going for a while 😁

Your pelvic floor should be strong enough to cope with the demands of the exercise you do, without you having to think about it - no leaks, no running to the toilet before or after exercising, no hip pain, no back pain. No feeling that your pelvic organs might drop out😳

The problem is if it’s not.   Chances are you’ll avoid the exercise or just put up with any issues thinking it’s normal.

Postnatal bodies are different than they were pre-pregnancy, they have compensated to allow room for a growing baby and carrying the extra weight at the front.

You don’t automatically restore your core function after having a baby so going back to exercise without giving it much thought (because no one really tells you any different) will just strengthen the compensations you have developed instead.

This could result in leaking when you exercise or feeling like you need to p*e even if your bladder isn’t full, but could also show up as hip pain, low back pain or even knee pain.

Balance is key - doing some isolated kegels isn’t enough and won’t work if you have a tight pelvic floor. Your pelvic floor works directly with your diaphragm and transverse abdominis (deep ab muscles) but also in conjunction with muscles in your hips and back for a full support system, so your fitness programme needs to integrate all these to get them to work together.

Once your core is balanced and restored and your foundation is strong, you can build your fitness back up from there and you shouldn’t have to worry about your pelvic floor when you exercise.

PS: Any issue you might have with your core and pelvic floor when you exercise can be resolved, you don’t have to live with it.  It may be common but it’s not normal.

Taking my own advice and met up this afternoon with for a fab socially distanced catch up with a takeout coffee from . Forgot to take a photo so here’s one taken last week when it was sunny ☀️😜

Inbetween coaching and walks, I’m also using my time this lockdown to catch up on a course I’m studying on shoulder movement and corrective exercises.

So many people I know (including myself!) have had or have ongoing shoulder impingement, tightness, neck pain and struggle to lift properly overhead. Manual therapy can release the tightness but the movement patterns need to change to get the muscles doing the job they are meant to do otherwise the problem will just keep coming back.

I always programme shoulder mobility for my clients when they start training with me as most of them need it, so the extra knowledge I’ll gain from this course will be invaluable to my coaching toolbox 💪🏼

I think we’re all feeling pretty rubbish at the moment 🙁 I’m gutted and frustrated that gyms have had to close, exercise really does help you feel better and that is so important right now!

I’m grateful that I can still coach my clients over Zoom but there will be plenty of you missing your regular gym sessions and classes.

When you’re faced with things out of your control, focus on what you can control.

Here are some things you can do (and are often neglected) that will do your body the world of good to help you feel better over the next four weeks of lockdown and ready for when the gyms open again.
