What an amazing day today. We took and Stanley down to for the regionals, and they smashed it out the park. All 3 riders won all their classes and have qualified for nationals at today was Lilis first time off the lead in countryside challenge, and Rhys went off lead for the full day! I couldn’t be more proud of them and our new member of the team Stanley! Thank you for lending Lili Hollie. A huge thanks to the team back home who help all this happen. And thanks of course to who have finally gone on the jackets! and a special thanks to again for all her help!

This weekend we took lilianas_equestrian_life down to see Amanda at tilefieldequestrian and to meet the inspirational Para Dressage zoe_squirrell Zoe and Amanda introduced Lili to the biggest, but arguably safest horse she’s ever ridden Tallula! Zoe gave us a quick demo, and Tallula and Amanda worked together to help Lili understand her body when she’s onboard to help her and Quest RDA Group s Hollie at RDA South East Region regionals this week! What an incredible opportunity and experience for us all, and I don’t know if you see the screen… but this kid is straighter than most of us! A huge thank you to both Zoe and Amanda for an unforgettable experience! We will be back! We can’t be more grateful to Zoe for all the help and advice she’s given us over the last couple of months and facilitating this opportunity! I would say but realistically Tallula is 😅🤣. ❤️❤️❤️

An amazing second time out for our little Irish project Shauna. … apparently my video skills didn’t make the cut the first time out 🙄. What a bold little ponio!

Thanks as always to all the team behind us making these days possible, and of course emersonwatsonvetstheequinebalancespecialistjackholder_farrierwilliamsequineltdtopspec_horse_feedsdelasallesaddlery

It is with immense sadness that we share the loss of beautiful Magic💔

Magic became suddenly and seriously unwell with colic on Saturday and, despite every effort, we sadly had to say goodbye.

Magic was an incredibly special pony, and a true favourite with everyone. She touched countless hearts during her time with us, giving so many riders confidence, happiness and unforgettable memories. She was one of those truly special ponies who quietly changed lives just by being herself.

Her loss is being felt deeply by everyone at Quest RDA and Laris Farm, and by the many people lucky enough to know and love her.

Run free, Magic. You were deeply loved and will never be forgotten.

A huge thanks to the team at Emerson & Watson for getting to her so swiftly and Liphook Equine Hospital for looking after her so well in her final hours 💔

Available to Share, 16.2 Schoolmaster

A rare opportunity to share a true schoolmaster. Tess is the perfect horse for an experienced rider who has ridden to a good level but doesn’t have the time or resources for their own horse.

Apologies for the lack of photos, she likes to scowl at cameras.

Tess is an exceptionally talented mare with a funny personality and a huge amount to teach the right person. She is a safe, sane ride on the flat with absolutely no desire to behave like an electric competition horse when schooling. A showjumper by trade, her schooling is still more of a work in progress than her jumping ever was, but she is coming on beautifully and is keen to please if asked politely. While Tess absolutely knows and loves her jumping job, at this stage in her life we are far more interested in prioritising variety, hacking and enjoyable schooling than hammering her round tracks every weekend. She hacks well, enjoys having a job and loves getting out and about, although she is not a total plod or beach donkey, and does enjoy a bit of fun.

She is a big mare with an even bigger personality. Clever, opinionated and very much a mare, she needs a confident adult handler with good horse sense and quiet confidence. No novices or under 18s please. Although she is a big horse, due to mileage she has a rider weight limit of 80kg.

Tess has had a varied career in showjumping and eventing and has a lot of mileage at only 14, so we are looking for someone whose priorities are hacking, schooling and enjoying a quality horse rather than intensive jumping. There may be opportunities to compete and, for the right rider, do some jumping in that too.

On the ground Tess can be expressive and appreciates confident, experienced handling. She is not nasty, but she absolutely knows when someone is unsure of themselves and will happily exploit uncertainty if allowed.

She has been extensively investigated by the vets and carefully managed throughout her time with us, with welfare remaining our absolute priority. She is sound, comfortable and happy in work, and any physical limitations will be fully discussed with potential sharers.

Tess is an incredibly rewarding horse to ride and build a relationship with. Underneath the opinions is a very clever, funny and genuinely lovely mare looking for her person.

Please pop us a message if she sounds up your street. No stable duties required. Prices can be flexible depending on package, as what matters most for Tess is finding the right person.

For sharers wanting to jump we will require videos of you jumping and will not consider anyone inexperienced jumping big horses. If you want to do more than the occasional small fence, you will not be considered unless you have competitively competed at 90cm or above. Tess is exceptionally honest and will always look after her jockey, but she knows her job and jumps to win. She would likely overwhelm a less experienced rider.

So as some of you guessed…
This is not milking practice for a dairy cow. Nor is it the world’s worst Halloween activity.

This… is a sand test 🧤
(Yes, that is poo in a glove. Yes, we’re proud of it.)

So what is the problem with sand?

Sand colic, or in cases like DB recently (severe constipation with no colic), happens when horses ingest sand over time. Grazing short pasture, eating off sandy ground, even rain splashing it onto the grass… it all adds up.

That sand doesn’t just pass through… it builds up in the gut, causing irritation, weight loss, constipation, diarrhoea, and sometimes colic.

And yes, it can get serious quickly.
Poor Impression found that out the hard way after that long dry summer.

We’re incredibly lucky at Laris…
No mud = impractical shoes all year.

But the trade-off?
No mud = all the sand.

At Laris, “sand” is a swear word. And it’s incredibly hard to manage.
Rain, however, we celebrate… well, maybe only in the warmer months.

The problem is:

• Horses will always pick at the floor
• Grass length is a constant juggle (especially with the chunky ones)
• Some are professionals at eating everything except the grass

So we don’t try to eliminate it… we try to manage it.

What we actually do

Regular testing
Yes, gloves, poo, zero dignity… and the occasional glove line dropping off multiple poo bombs.

Grass management
Not too short (sand buffet)
Not too long (obesity club)

Psyllium support
Typical guidance: 7 days a month, ~50g

At Laris… we don’t do typical.
Some of ours are on 1g per kg bodyweight.
(Yes, that hurts the bank, but not as much as surgery.)

We don’t guess.
Everything is guided by emersonwatsonvets and theliphookequinehospital, plus some lovely vets in California (the sand colic capital).

Because the reality is simple:
You can’t eliminate sand.
You can only try to manage it.

The takeaway

It’s a quiet risk that doesn’t shout until it’s a problem.

But with testing, management, and quick response to changes… we stay on top of it as much as we can.

So if you see us shaking a glove of poo like it owes us money…

We’re not losing the plot.
We’re keeping our horses as safe as possible

What’s going on here? Does anyone know why we’ve got this interesting set up?

This week the Baby Cashew went to the phenomenal team at Donnington Grove Vets for a little lump removal. She’s back, feeling well and of course the only pony that would ever be allowed on the lawn.
