Let’s face it, golf can be unfair even when you hit good shots!
Have a look at the points below, they may be of help to you in keeping calm on the course 👌🏻
- How you react to a bad shot can change your round. Do you get angry when you hit a bad tee shot or do you think about the possibilities of making a score from that position? Looking at the best outcomes of a bad situation usually helps you to salvage something.
- Visualising the last good putt, drive, chip etc is a must for your pre shot routine. When an area of your game is feeling weaker, we as golfers always remember the last bad shot we hit!
- I work with a lot of golfers who say their mindset is the issue when it’s a pattern in their technique. Ask yourself, is it a recurring issue that takes place, it might even be on the same hole! Discuss and work through the pattern with your coach and at some point have a playing lesson so they can understand you in a live situation.
- Routine is everything. If you stand over a shot thinking about 3-4 things in your technique, your focus is not on the actual situation. Develop a routine where you might follow the same pre shot process with very little emphasis on what you’re working on and make it more about completing a checklist. For example on a tee shot check off a yardage, your strategy, club selection, then visualise the outcome in a rehearsal. Remember, repetition normally brings consistency.
- Manage your expectations. How often do you get off to a bad start and think the round is over? Try and break your round into 3-6 hole games and set small goals for each part of the round. You may find that focusing on mini rounds brings some positive scoring for parts of the round. This should give you some good feeling for the next game rather than writing the round off completely.
