An interesting day for Clare and I on the Yorkshire 3 Peaks. Ominous skies and thunderstorm warnings meant an immediate re-evaluation and a decision to avoid the usual route up Pen y Ghent. Watching the storm to our left it was still over 7 miles away when suddenly a cell to our right opened and a further cell was moving in from Preston. An immediate return to the start, a reroute down the valley and eventually the storms cleared leaving a dry but windy ascent of Pen y Ghent, a hot walk to Ribblehead and a tiring route up and over Whernside with more strong headwind. Approx half of the trekkers still felt capable enough of tackling Ingleborough and they pushed on to a sub 12 hour challenge. Fantastic result trekkers, great work a pleasure spending time with you all.

Mike messaged me the week before Spire Ultra to say he'd marshal the usual spot at Pratt Hall. After a bit of banter he added that he was "currently struggling in Grenada". He always liked to point out he was on holiday, usually somewhere nice and warm.
Three days later news came through that he had passed away. It's the kind of news that stops you in your tracks, have I heard correctly?
Mike was there to help me when I first suggested setting up the Spire Ultra. Instead of it being just Clare and I floundering around trying to thread together the pieces to create a race, Mike sat me down and showed me the processes to follow, the people to contact and the permissions to obtain. He also suggested that the first edition be "In Association with North Derbyshire Running Club", thus benefiting from ARC affiliation. The Spire Ultra grew and more races were created, all of which benefited from that early work with Mike. When free he would always offer to help out and when I first mentioned Pratt Hall as an ideal location (he quizzed why I would post him at a place called Pratt ) that actually became his favourite location. On the first Cordwell Colossus he really made himself at home - runners were muttering "there's a marshal back there reclining in a chair and drinking beer!!". (it was a hot day so I don't blame him). Even more amusing when I phoned him he said "there's runners shoving bits of book pages at me - what's that all about?" I forgot to mention that runners would be handing him pages from a honesty book to prove they'd been on the correct route.
We've had serious discussions, we've had laughs. We've run and we've enjoyed beer. We've always tried to keep a certain balance to life and Mike, we'll miss you.
(Mike Bravin's funeral is on 19th June. Donations will be for Ashgate Hospice).

Having just been featured in the latest .races newsletter we thought it appropriate to highlight our next race - Cordwell Colossus - on 8th August. This pretty 20 mile trail event has always proved popular with the ladies. 2 years ago the starting line up was 60% female. Looking at the stats so far, this year's entry list is currently made up of 70% female! Remarkable stats I'm sure you'll agree.
What makes it popular? As well as securing consecutive Racecheck Gold Awards over the past two years, the comments from the ladies make insightful reading;

Brilliantly organised and friendly event. Enthusiastic and encouraging marshals. Well stocked checkpoints. Beautiful route on runnable, quiet trails.

Fantastic event! Beautiful trails and excellent support from the team - super friendly, welcoming and inclusive race :)

2nd year of running and that's due to it being an amazing event, route and well organised. The support is brilliant and marshals move around the course to ensure everyone's safety. The course is beautiful, with a mix of roads, trails, woods and reservoir, appealing to those who like to run in nature. It is tough, there's no getting away from that, with 3000ft of climbing. But this is where you meet friends and support crews that you never expected to meet. I have met and ran with strangers the last 2 years, who I now consider friends with like minded attitudes - support each other and lets get round the course safely and enjoy the "day out". A generous cut off time, for those who may want to walk it all, making it a course for everyone. I will definitely be there next year too, one for the diary!

Two weeks after having 21 teefs out, Mookie is back in business. The race van has been turned into an expedition van and we're out seeing the best of the Peak with back to back DofE expeditions. Mookie loves the fuss. And the food.

Big thanks to Theresa Haworth for her work in sharpening up the design for the 10th edition Spire memento. did an excellent job on the production, engraving it nicely into cherry wood.

Spire Ultra you little belter. 33 miles of gorgeous countryside, run friendly weather, a super team of marshals and 108 runners toeing the start line. It's safe to say it all went smoothly. Fairy-tale finish for Ben Harris who after being 2nd or 3rd for the last 4 years cracked a well earned win. Abby Heffren won the ladies race and set a new course record. The final 3 home finished with 40 seconds to spare, well done Salli, Marie and Kathy for making the most of your day 😁
Big thanks to Derby Runner for donating the winner's prizes, North Wingfield Community Resource Centre for their excellent facilities and the marshals who ensured the event went like clockwork, and cheered the runners all the way around.
Looking forward to next year already.

Back from an awesome weekend dahn sahf working on the most excellent South Downs Challenge for Royal Marsden with Charity Challenge and then on to a long overdue return to a bronze expedition training sesh with old friends from Sam Sykes Collective. I'm not really able to share pics of the kids so here's some of the more memorable moments from the South Downs Challenge - glorious weather until it wasn't. Three days later my boots are still wet 🤣
