Why do men and women have different body fat percentages on average?

It’s not just about diet or training — biology plays a big role.

On average, women naturally carry more body fat than men, and that’s completely normal. The main reasons are:

• Hormones: women have higher oestrogen, which supports fat storage
• Reproductive health: women need more essential fat for fertility, pregnancy, and breastfeeding
• Muscle mass: men typically have more lean muscle, which lowers body fat percentage
• Fat distribution: men tend to store more around the abdomen, while women often store more around the hips, thighs, and glutes

Here are some general body fat percentage ranges you can use:

Men
• Essential fat: 2–5%
• Average/healthy: 10–20%
• Regularly training/fit: 8–15%
• Obese: 25%+

Women
• Essential fat: 10–13%
• Average/healthy: 18–28%
• Regularly training/fit: 16–24%
• Obese: 32%+
