☀️ | Stay safe in the water, especially with this hot weather tempting everyone to cool off.
A quick reminder following the Royal Life Saving Society UK - RLSS UK Water Safety Code, because a refreshing swim should never turn into a risky situation.
🌊 Stop and think
Hot days can make cold water feel extra inviting, but open water is unpredictable. Check for hidden dangers, currents, depth changes, and water quality before you go anywhere near the edge.
👀 Stay together
Whether you’re heading to a local river spot, the coast, or a lake, never swim alone. Keep an eye on each other, especially children. Strong swimmers aren’t invincible, cold water shock and currents can catch anyone off guard.
📱Call 999 in an emergency
If someone gets into trouble, don’t jump in after them. Call 999 and ask for the Coastguard at the coast or Fire and Rescue inland.
🛟 Float
If you fall in or become tired, stay calm, float on your back, and call for help. Use throw lines or flotation if available,
Hot weather doesn't make cold water safe, even on the warmest days, UK waters can be cold enough to cause cold water shock.
Let’s enjoy the sunshine without putting ourselves or others at risk. Share this to help keep our community safe this summer.
Stay cool, stay smart, stay safe.
With warm weather forecast this weekend and into next week, more of us will enjoy spending time in, on, or around water, so it’s important to stay safe.
Almost half (47%) of UK accidental drownings happen between May and August, with higher risks during warmer weather.
Keep yourself and your family safe:
• Check for hazards, including depth, currents, tides, and hidden underwater objects.
• Stay together and swim in lifeguarded areas.
In an emergency:
• Call 999 immediately
• If you fall in or become tired, stay calm, float on your back, and call for help
