Our Cuthbert (2nd) team visited Backworth last week. The weather was beautiful at the beginning but the heavens opened during the day, and the game had to be called off with Durham 8-7 up. Luckily the result stands!

After much discussion via email and checking our lightning strike insurance Durham Bede and Alnmouth decided to risk the predicted weather maelstrom on Saturday 19th July and we welcomed the visitors from the North to Chester-le-Street in surprisingly benign conditions. At least it allowed us to set up and practice while remaining dry.
Captains agreed to declare the match complete if we had managed at least half the games and so we started as soon as we could.
At lunch time, the rain having started once we had finished a couple of games Durham Bede were leading six and a half to two and a half. We needed to keep this lead after lunch if we were to gain the win, but in fact we managed to consolidate, winning the next 8 games and finishing the match with a score of fourteen and a half to three and a half.
Congratulations to both sides for persevering though the rain, we only ran for shelter a couple of times when it got particularly torrential, and contributing to an enjoyable match, and well done to Peter for once again remaining unbeaten all day.

With clouds circling in the unpredictable wind, but in generally bright sunshine we welcomed the team from Backworth to Croquet Durham on Saturday 28th June. We performed well in the morning despite Andrew and I managing to scrape a 4-4 draw having been 4-0 up! Despite a couple of losses before and after lunch we got back to winning ways and finished strongly. Well done to the whole team and the usual thanks to supporters and tea suppliers and to Malcolm for standing in for Roger at the last minute. Final result 13 and a half to 4 and a half.
