Croquet Durham Croquet Durham is a welcoming croquet club at Riverside Park, Chester-le-street. We're open to everyone from novices to experienced.

We had a great turnout for our John Cotes Trophy with Stuart emerging as the winner defeating William 3-2 in the final thanks to his judicious use of his bisques (extra shots).

We faced an unreliable forecast, but with the mercury rising and no precipitation falling, the trip the Bede team made uphill and down dale to the rolling countryside of Alnmouth was a most enjoyable trip out. Scores fluctuated throughout the day, and things at times seemed very uneven. We were in the ascension to start with and then in decline later on all struggling to predict what would happen at any time. Arthur, Peter, Roger and I could each only manage one singles win but we had greater success in the doubles, despite our games being somewhat up and down. The final score was 9-9.... at least something ended up level.

Fine, if overcast weather and the excellent lawns at Backworth greeted us on Wednesday 15th for our latest league match. During the morning the scores remained pretty level but we unfortunately just missed out in the end with a final result of ten and a half Backworth, seven and a half Durham. Despite this disappointment we all had a most enjoyable day finishing in lovely sunshine, and it was a pleasure as always to play on such well-maintained lawns. A special thank you goes to Natalie for stepping up and allowing us to field a full team!

Bright sunshine greeted the team from Auckland as we welcomed them to the Riverside park again last Saturday (27th June). Everyone was on good form and we completed a convincing win seventeen and a half to a half. The uneven scoreline reflects the fact that Auckland were unable to field all their lowest handicapped players, but I trust an enjoyable time was had despite that. Well done to everyone for surviving the heat and lasting until the end. Thanks also to the spectators who came and offered their support including our new players, Pam and Paul.

A lovely sunny day, delightful hospitality and a competitive match meant the long trip up north to Bamburgh this Friday, 19th of June, was very worthwhile. Durham Bede started well in the morning and went in to lunch with a good lead. However, after lunch fortunes were somewhat reversed and only a golden hoop win by Roger in the final match allowed us to come away with a narrow 10-8 victory. Wins and losses scattered throughout the team made for an enjoyable match with everyone to thank and everyone to blame. Here's to another fun day next Saturday at home to Auckland.

Our Cuthbert (2nd) team visited Backworth last week. The weather was beautiful at the beginning but the heavens opened during the day, and the game had to be called off with Durham 8-7 up. Luckily the result stands!
