On Saturday, we were at the Scottish Open in Dundee. Emi and Mike entered their first competition, and performed amazingly well. It's a big competition, with a lot going on, and daunting for your first one. Emi finished 7th, just missing the final in the 8 and under kata, and then 12th in a large 9 to 10 year old kata category. Mike performed well in both his kata and kumite, and helped the team rotation to the quarter finals. William Fox had a strong kata category, but ended up in joint 4th, and handled his first kumite bouts really well, with the highlight being a superb ippon in the first round of the team rotation. William Marshall was in a high quality kata competition and got 5th, and fought well. Daniel brought us back a bronze in his weighted kumite, and Jim got a silver in kata and a bronze in kumite. Congratulations also to Matt Hudson for his two bronzes, one in kata and one kumite.

On Saturday, we had a small team competing at the KUGB Nationals in Nottingham. Great performances from our 3 competitors, with the highlight being William Fox missing out on the final by the narrowest of margins in Children's brown belt kata. Thanks to Daniel and David for coaching.

On Saturday, Sensei Jim and Will travelled to Repton to take part in the KUGB Grand Slam, representing Scotland. They trained with the squad for an hour, and then the squad competition took place. Sensei Jim achieved his first Grand Slam final, taking fourth in senior male kata. Will performed well in kata, but excelled in his cadet kumite, taking second place. This is fantastic achievement for his first squad competition, and we are very proud.

We had our end of year class on the 17th. It was a fun class, with Christmas hats, and our traditional kata and kumite competition. Great performances from everyone.
We also presented our annual awards.
Huge congratulations to our Student of the Year, Joseph. He trains consistently, works hard every lesson, and is a pleasure to teach.
This year we introduced a Most Improved trophy, and our winner was William. He's made great strides, and shows the right attitude to his training, which will stand him in good stead as he will no doubt be a brown belt very soon.

Our attendance award winners were:
Gold - Yvonne,
Silver - Emi,
Bronze - Matty (not pictured, as he was ill that day)

It's been a great year. The club achieved 31 medals in all competitions - 9 gold, 9 silver and 13 bronze, which is a very good return given our numbers.
We're looking forward to the coming year.
Merry Christmas everyone.

Many congratulations to Matty, who passed his black belt grading today with Sensei Frank Brennan and Sensei Gary Harford in Sunderland. We are very pleased, and he deserves this recognition after all his hard work preparing.

Well done to everyone who trained and graded yesterday. It's always great for the instructors to see people achieving something - it's really why we do what we do. Thank you to our helpers - Paula and Eleanor - and thanks, Alan, for coming along to support. I want to highlight Will Marshall, our Club Captain, because he always sets such a good example of how to be a black belt - helping people during the grading and always supporting the club in everything we do. Brilliant.

Haven't posted in a while, because we've been so busy. Jim, Daniel and David went to the WUKF World championships in Sweden. Jim brought back two bronzes, one in team kata and the other in Kobudo. Next, the intrepid three went to the Kanzen cup in Dundee, and came back with gold in team kata, and Jim took gold in individual veteran's kata. We also got silver in family kata and two bronzes, for David and Jim in their respective kumite. Next we went to Spain, and represented KUGB Scotland at WSKA. No medals this time, but great performances from all three.
This weekend, we took a small team to the Northern Region Championships in Sunderland. We are really proud of our competitors, who showed great spirit and competed well. Congratulations to William Fox, who took home a well deserved gold medal in under 16 novice to 4th kyu kata, along with a silver in 10 and under novice to 4th kyu kata. Jim took silver in veteran's kata, and our team kata took bronze.

Congratulations to everyone who trained and graded today with Sensei Frank Brennan at our club grading. Lots of positive comments, and also things to take away and work on. Thank you to Will M, Matty and Jaxon for coming to train and staying to support the grading. Much appreciated. Also thank you to Alan for coming and supporting the whole thing even though he couldn't train - it means a lot to have your support.

We've had a busy few weeks competing. On the weekend of 17th May, we were at the KUGB Nationals in Nottingham, followed by the Leeds Youth Competition on the Sunday. No medals at the Nationals, but great performances from Senseis Daniel, David and Jim. At the Leeds Youth, David brought home a bronze medal.
Last weekend, we were at the Scottish Open in Dundee on the Saturday. Good results, with Sensei Jim winning gold in individual kata, gold in weapons kata, and silver in individual kumite. Daniel won Sanbon Kumite +75kg, and David took silver in Ippon kumite. On the Sunday, we had a small team at the Sunderland championships. We were very proud of everyone's efforts, whether winning medals or not. William took bronze in his kumite, and David took bronze in his kata.
