Also this morning at the club was the semi-final of the Bucks Plate.
We were hosting this match and with an early start 10-00 hrs some bacon rolls were available with tea and coffee.
The contestants in this match were Chesham Bowls Club and
Long Crendon . I didn’t see any score cards but it was the aggregate scores over the 4 rinks that decided the end result.
It was quite an exciting game and at roughly the halfway stage Chesham were only 3 down at
38-35. That gap did widen somewhat in the second 9 ends and it wasn’t looking good for Chesham but they started the fight back and almost made it . The scores were level with 2 ends I think left to play but the win just slipped away on the last end and finished with a final score of
Chesham 71 - 75 Long Crendon.
A exciting game to sit and watch with very good play from all involved.
Hopefully my comments are correct to the best of my knowledge but if not I am sure someone will let me know .

Sunday Sept 6th and another early start 08-00 for the trip to Woburn Sands for the Burnham Plate Semifinal. When the draw was made our opponents were Amersham.
Broadways team in the all ladies format were
Broadway. Amersham.
Sarah Jaycock, Diane,
Debbie Horsted, Val,
Caryl Collins, Delia,
Carol Crick. Pauline.
Reserve , Heather Kensall.
Only pic I have is of the scorecard and we didn’t get off to a great start when dropping a 6 on end 1. That put you into catch up mode which is never easy and after 6 ends it was 6-7 to Amersham and 6-11 at halfway.
From then on in the second half of the game shots were hard to come by and the girls conceded with 1 end to play and a final score
Broadway 9-21 Amersham.

Well done to you all and that last step to the final is never easy.

Nearing the end of the 2026 outdoor bowls season with several comps in the closing stages.
Today Kieran Jaycock one of our several very good young players was a finalist in the London and Southern Counties Lonsdale Trophy playing at Southey Bowls Club in Surrey. I haven’t seen a scorecard or many details but it must have been a hard close match that unfortunately Kieran did lose but with a final score that could not have been much closer.
20-21 ,Well done Kieran .

Sept 3rd and we were away to Hemel Hempstead in a friendly match of 3 mxdt. A fine and warm afternoon. My second time at Hemel this week after Tues Vets game and I still couldn’t work out how to play the green. As on Tues there seemed some odd lines to try to come to terms with and not just me but others as well had a few bowls going against the bias . Difficult to explain but strange to see and certainly didn’t help our score line.

Rink. 2.
1. Janet Meacham,
2. Debbie Horsted,
Skip. Chris Stewart.
The first two ends were equal and the score was 1-1 but it wasn’t until the 12th end when the 2nd shot was scored and Hemel were building a good total and 2-15 up with 6 ends to play. As I said in my early comments we were all having problems on the green and finding shots hard to come by. Only to of those ends were in our favour and the end of game score was
Broadway 5-20 Hemel.

Rink. 3. Hemel.
1. Lee Jaycock, Barry,
2. Michael Meacham, David,
Skip. Bryan Collins. Terry.
We did win the 1st end but but the next 5 went to Hemel and the score at half way was 2-18 Hemel.
We did get a few shots together and won 5 of the second 9 ends but it was never enough to close the big gap. Final score was
Broadway 11-28 Hemel.

Rink. 4.
1. Malcom Robins,
2. Caryl Collins,
Skip. Sam Lincoln.
With most of us struggling most of the time it was a similar start with our first shot coming on end 8 but Hemel were already well ahead at 1-15 that became 1-19 at halfway. Four ends of 1 shot each in the second 9 ends didn’t help to cut down on Hemel’s lead and the final score was
Broadway 5-26 Hemel.
Aggregate, 21-74 Hemel.
Rinks, 0-3

Sept 1st and the Broadway Vets were away at Hemel Red for the last game in the 2026 season.
A nice sunny afternoon and reasonably warm with a light wind. The green didn’t play to badly and wasn’t as heavy as it looked but it did have some awkward line that seemed difficult to get the hang of.

Rink. 3. Herts Red,
1. Allan Bryant, Dave P,
2. John Read, Terry G,
Skip. Stuart Churcher. Brian S.
Winning 6 of the first 9 end was a good start and gave us the lead of
12-7. The shots were a little harder to come by in the second 9 and that allowed Hemel to catch up and take the lead at 15-16 with 2 ends to play. Broadway won those 2 ends and finished with a close score of
Broadway 18-16 Hemel Red.

Rink, 4.
1. Malcolm Robins, Alan M,
2. Allen Schwartz, Barry L,
Skip. Bryan Collins. Jim Bo.
Broadway found it difficult to work out the way to play on the grass and struggled to get things going but that is not taking anything away from Hemel , lead Alan and Skip Jimbo being very accurate and with some short woods form both sides on some ends it was not easy to get in the head and get any score although I did have a couple of wicks that worked , wicks are not always liked but are part of the game .
7 ends to 11 in Hemels favour was reflected in the final score of
Broadway 9-20 Herts Red.
Aggregate, 27-36.

Sat Aug 30th and Broadway were hosts to the Bucks VPs. Five mxdt
over 18 ends . After a nice morning weather wise when I left home to go to the club there were spots of rain on the windscreen and that was not what we needed for the bowls match but luckily the rain held off but it was quite windy with strong gusts that tends to make for an interesting game. There were a few Broadway members playing for the VPs
Lewis Fletcher, Bryan Collins, Janet & Michael Meacham . Not many of the VPs play regularly on the all weather playing surface and the gusting wind didn’t help us very much. It was a tough afternoon with the VPs not getting any rink wins but an enjoyable time on the green with a good spread after the game and a chat plus a raffle. No rink by rink comments but pics with comments.
It was a big loss for the VPs and the aggregate score was
Broadway 109-55 Bucks VPs.

Friday Aug 28th and a re-arranged game in the Vets League away to Herts Red. A couple of mid afternoon showers didn’t make things easy for us. Our next and last game is on Tues Sept 1st against Hemel Red.

Rink. 2. Herts.
1. Malcolm Robins, Les,
2. Bryan Collins, Ray,
Skip.Lewis Fletcher. Dave.
We didn’t make a great start only scoring 5 shots in the first 9 ends.
Herts started very strongly with a 3 on end 1 and then a 5 on end 3 to take a good with the score 5-11 in Herts favour. 9 shots in the next 4 ends took us into the lead at 14-11 but we then lost 3 ends to be 14-15 down with 2 ends to play
The last 2 ends added 4 shots to our total and the final score was
Broadway 18-15 Herts Red.
Well played Malcolm who found his game in the second half and Lewis who got us out of trouble quite a few times. My game was not so good and I did struggle a bit.

Rink. 4.
1. Bill Caple, Mick,
2. Allen Schwartz, Rod,
Skip. Stuart Churcher. Steve.
A really difficult start for the team with only 3 shots gained in the 3rd end and 8 ends with no score and the score was 3-18 to Herts. Four good ends in a row got our score to 9-18 with 3 ends to play but only 1 of those went to us and the final score was
Broadway 12-23 Herts Red.
Aggregate, 30-38.
