This week I created a sequence around the warrior poses, Virabadrasana I, II and III. The sequence was intended to bring focus and strength to the participants, encompassing a warrior mindset, but also support the running idea behind it, and question, 'who am I?'.
I asked at the beginning for the class to have a self check in, thoughts, emotions, the body, energy, and then to hold onto that place of observation and awareness from where the check in is made.
As the warrior poses unfolded, I brought in the story of the warriors, suggesting that any state change, or impact on energy, from being the warrior could be seen as a story like the ones we live.
This and other questions throughout were to lend weight to the idea that the true self is the unchanging, permanent awareness, behind the mind. Everything else is just weather!
This quote, from Pema Chodron, captures the essence of what I was trying to bring to the class on a philosophical level. We wound down with a visualisation drawing the sky into the body.
