Nice plantation of trees local to the factory. All ages , there are always a few young trees that die, which is why we plant 3 or 4 for everyone we fell. There has been very little rain in south east of UK these last two important months for growth. One dead tree at the end has honey fungus which is a bacteria in the soil that kills willows.

🌳 Unlike standard forestry, where trees are often left to grow naturally, English Cricket Bat Willow requires active management, and the most critical task is trimming.

Willow trees produce side shoots, which, if left to grow woody, result in knots in the timber. To maximise return on investment at harvest, growers want a clear, knot-free, trunk to a height of 3 metres.

All competitors seem to post is pictures of English willow clefts that are perfect , narrow grain , white with maybe a little red on the edge … that is not the reality …every year Grade 1 clefts are very limited in number … ugly clefts are produced in vast numbers … nothing wrong with them, play as well just don’t look pretty. One big advantage is that they are very , very much cheaper!!

Growing English Cricket Bat Willow sets for the future! We have close ties with all our growers one of these is the Freeman family in Ford End, Essex. They grow thousands of sets for us every year and look after them so well with proper fencing, watering and take great care. We do our bit with sprays and w**d control when it is needed but the relationship goes from strength to strength. Some fabulous red wood with narrow grains and butterfly stain going through the dry grading system this week. They may not last particularly long as this narrow grain is a little more brittle but the will hit the ball from the off.

This is how you trim your trees with our removable metal guards.

The side shoots must be removed at least twice a year to maintain and clean trunk that will be worth harvesting in the future.
