Bespoke is in the details.

The pins on this piece were made to mirror the engraved recoil bars of a matching .375 Lancaster rifle, not similar, but matched.

The walnut comes from an offcut of the original stock, carried through and finished in exactly the same way as the rifle. Same material, same process, just in a different form.

It’s the extra steps, the ones that take time, that turn something into a true one-off.

Not just made.

Considered.

WIP.

A gralloching knife isn’t the sort of thing that gets used every day. It’s a tool with a very specific purpose, brought out when it’s needed, then put away again.

But that doesn’t mean it should be treated as any less of a knife.
Just because a knife sees less use doesn’t mean the finish should be rushed or the materials cut back.

When it does come out, it should still feel right in the hand and look like the effort went into making it properly.

This one will be finished with desert ironwood scales. Dense, stable and full of natural character, a material that suits that balance perfectly.

Even if it only comes out a handful of times each season, it should still feel like something special to carry.

WIP.

This one’s nearly there, just needs the pins fitted and the logo before it’s finished.

I’ve always thought knives like this fall into the same category as a lot of the finer things in life. You don’t strictly need them, there are cheaper tools that will do the job.

Everyone has something they choose to spend a bit more on. A watch, a pair of boots, good clothes.

Brought not because they have to be, but because they’re appreciated.

That’s what this is meant to be. Something made carefully, from good materials, built to last, and enjoyable to use every time you pick it up.

Not something you need.
Something you want.

This one now sits in a fairly well-known pair of hands.

The joint between the bolsters and the scales on this one took some careful fitting. The scales were smoked in to get them sitting perfectly against the brass, a technique more commonly used when fitting parts on rifles and shotguns, which felt fitting given this is a Charles Lancaster branded piece.

Brass bolsters flowing cleanly into camel bone scales with domed brass pins, all wrapped around a AEB-L stainless steel.

A simple pattern, but one where the small details matter.

Pieces like this don’t come around often.

Cocobolo.

The depth of colour, the way the grain runs, the way it catches the light when you turn it in your hand.

You don’t have to do much with it, just shape it and let it be what it is.

Paired here with a hollow ground AEB-L blade with a mirror finish so the scales do the talking.

The old ways still make sense.

Everyone goes to the belt grinder for shaping handles, but honestly, I prefer a hand-stitched rasp on woods.

It cuts quick, never clogs, and you’ve got full control over what you’re doing. You can feel the shape coming together instead of leaning into a grinder and hoping you don’t take too much off.

This hand-stitched rasp is from Workshop Haven and it works great.

Smetimes the simple tools are the right ones.

It’s light, nimble and sits right in the hand.

Fine at the tip, easy through meat, and exactly what it should be.
