Keith & Patricia Rollason Memorial Match
Under glorious August sunshine and in front of an excellent crowd, Leek RUFC’s 3rd XV produced a dominant 45–7 victory over Worksop in the Keith & Patricia Rollason Memorial Match, an occasion marked by emotion, respect and a strong sense of community.
Before kick‑off, players, officials and supporters from both clubs observed a heartfelt minute’s silence in memory of Keith and Patricia Rollason, two dedicated volunteers who gave tirelessly to Leek Rugby over many years. It was a poignant and fitting start to an afternoon dedicated to honouring their legacy.
The atmosphere around the ground was superb, with strong home backing and an impressive travelling contingent from Worksop. Leek’s squad showcased an encouraging blend of youth and experience, with emerging players combining well alongside seasoned 3rd XV stalwarts, a clear sign of the depth and development within the club.
First Half
Leek made the ideal start. Harry Byrne finished a well‑worked move involving captain James Allcock and winger J***y Mackey, their sharp interplay setting the tone for the afternoon.
New signing Tom Beck quickly established himself as a real handful, powering through the Worksop defence to score twice. Man of the Match Callum Bloor added another, delivering a standout performance full of energy, accuracy and physicality.
Debutant Ethan Newton Taylor enjoyed an excellent first outing in Leek colours. Calm and composed from the tee, he slotted five conversions and also crossed for a try, a highly impressive debut.
Worksop responded strongly before the interval, applying sustained pressure and coming agonisingly close to scoring. Leek’s defence held firm, ensuring the home side went into the break with their lead intact.
Second Half
Worksop began the second half with real intent and were rewarded with a well‑worked try, reflecting their determination and attacking ambition. They continued to threaten throughout the half and were unfortunate not to add further points.
The remainder of the second period became a tighter contest, with both sides battling hard. In the closing stages, the match produced two memorable moments that perfectly captured the spirit of the occasion.
First, Worksop captain Simon Rollason, who switched shirts to join Leek for the final ten minutes in tribute to his parents, finished a flowing Leek attack to score just right of the posts.
Moments later, Leek 3rd XV veteran Pete Titley, equally comfortable at flanker or on the wing, powered over to add the final points of the afternoon.
A Fitting Tribute
It was a beautifully emotional ending to a special day. Two clubs came together, rivalry set aside, united in celebrating the lives of Keith and Patricia through the game they loved. While Leek’s 45–7 victory was emphatic, the occasion itself mattered far more — sunshine, shared respect, strong support from both sides, and a heartfelt tribute to two people who gave so much to Leek Rugby.
