OFFSEASON WORK FOR M&J COACHES 📚

A huge well done to 10 of our Mini section coaches who recently completed the RFU First Contact Coaching Course hosted here at Leek RUFC.

The course equips coaches with the knowledge and confidence to introduce contact safely and effectively across our age groups, helping create the best possible environment for young players to develop and enjoy the game.

It’s fantastic to see so many of our dedicated volunteers continuing to upskill and give their time to support the next generation of Moorlanders. We look forward to seeing Leek teams developing their tackling, breakdown and scrummaging next season 💪

A big thank you to RFU Coaching Lead Paul for delivering an excellent two-day course and sharing his expertise.

CLUBHOUSE UPDATE 🏡🏉☀️

New balcony to expand Leek Rugby Club facilities.
Outdoor bar and improved spectator areas also planned.

Work is set to begin later this month (June 2026) on a new balcony that will significantly increase the capacity of the Leek Rugby Club clubhouse.

Local Moorlands-based contractor Ashleigh’s Builders has been appointed to deliver the project, which will see the construction of a new steel structure measuring 12 metres by 6 metres—creating an additional 72 square metres of elevated space overlooking the St Edward’s Park pitch.

Beneath the balcony, a new patio area will be developed, featuring covered seating along with an outdoor bar and hot drinks area (subject to licensing approval). The project is scheduled for completion by the end of August, in time for the start of the new season.

The project has been made possible through years of careful planning, fundraising, and continued support from members and the wider community.

This development marks the latest in a series of ongoing improvements to the clubhouse. Last year’s refurbishment of the kitchen included upgrades to ventilation, cooking equipment, food preparation and storage facilities, as well as new flooring throughout.

A second phase of works is planned to follow, which will include the installation of a roof and retractable glass panels to enable year-round use of the balcony area.

Club chairman Marcus Midwinter said:
“The new balcony reflects our commitment to continuous improvement, both on and off the pitch. We have seen tremendous progress across the club in recent seasons, from the success of our senior teams to the continued growth of our junior section, girls’ rugby, and most recently the formation of our women’s team.

“As a community club rooted in the local area, we will continue to invest in facilities for players, members, and visitors alike, ensuring we can support this growth while remaining sustainable.”

“This project has only been possible thanks to the dedication and hard work of our volunteers and supporters, and we are extremely grateful to everyone who has contributed”

Three more key pieces of the puzzle locked in for 2026/27 🧩

We’re delighted to confirm that Oli Powell, Will Midwinter and Joe Byrne will continue as Player-Academy Coaches for the upcoming season.

Three talented young players who have been among the driving forces behind the rise of our 1XV in recent years, they remain key figures on the pitch and will continue their off-field contribution in their Academy coaching roles.

Having come through the club themselves, they’re perfectly placed to help develop the next generation of players and strengthen the pathway from Academy rugby into our senior teams.

The impact of that work is already clear to see, with double figures of Academy players making the step up into senior rugby last season.

Three outstanding players. Three proud homegrown Moorlanders. Three coaches helping shape the future of our club.

🏉 Pre-season gets underway on Tuesday 30th June with a full squad meeting followed by the first training session of the summer.

And this is just the start… keep your eyes peeled as we continue to unveil the players and coaches who will represent the Moorlanders in 2026/27.

Two further announcements complete our 2026/27 Senior Men’s coaching line-up 🏉

We’re delighted to confirm that Chris Mudd will continue as 2XV Coach for the 2026/27 season, while Pete McFadden steps up as the club’s Physio Lead.

Following a challenging but hugely promising campaign, Chris has helped establish our 2XV at Level 8, creating an environment where experienced players, young talent and those returning to the game can all thrive. Last season saw the side record some impressive victories over local 1XV opposition while continuing to provide a vital pathway into senior rugby.

Pete will continue his excellent work in the treatment room as he steps up to take on the role of Physio Lead.

Pete’s dedication behind the scenes plays a huge part in keeping players available, recovering quickly and ready to perform when matchday comes around.

We are delighted to have Chris and Pete continuing their work for another season.

More quality added to the Moorlanders coaching team for 2026/27 🏉

We’re delighted to confirm that Scott Rawlings will return as Player-Backs Coach for the upcoming season, while James Milan will be back on the field and joins the senior coaching setup as Player-S&C Lead.

Returning to the Blue & White last summer for the first time since his junior rugby days, Scott made an immediate impact both on and off the field. His influence helped develop our lively back line into an attacking force and his performances on the pitch earned recognition with selection for Lancashire County and a place in the North Rugby Team of the Year.

Joining him is another player who made a huge impact during his first season as a Moorlander. Dynamic scrum-half James Milan has converted his loan move from National League outfit Macclesfield into full registration with the club and will take on the role of Strength & Conditioning Lead.

James has already begun leading the squad’s off-season programme and will play a key role in driving performance and player development throughout the club.

Two exciting renewals. Two leaders setting a marker down both on and off the field 💪

COACHING ANNOUNCEMENTS 26/27 🏉

And just like that we are back!

The club is delighted to announce agreements that will keep our core senior men’s coaching set-up in place for the 2026/27 season.

Head Coach Joel Booth will pick up where he left off leading the senior squad both on and off the field following the 1XVs record-breaking 5th place finish at Level 5 last season.

He is joined by Yorkshireman, but by now adopted Moorlander, Andy Appleyard, who will continue to drive standards across the playing group as our Lead Coach.

Together, over the past few seasons, these two have combined to lead our senior playing squad to new heights and all at the club will look forward to getting behind them for the new campaign.

🏉 Pre-season gets underway on Tuesday 30th June with a full squad meeting followed by the first training session of the summer.

And this is just the start… keep your eyes peeled as we continue to unveil the players and coaches who will represent the Moorlanders in 2026/27.
