Trans Swimming Brighton

Trans Swimming Brighton For anyone whose gender expression has been keeping them from swimming. Every Wednesday 8.00-9.00 pm at St Luke's Swimming Pool, Brighton. Who is it for?

Trans Swimming Brighton is a friendly, welcoming space for anyone whose gender expression has been keeping them from swimming. Here are a few details:

Where? St Lukes's Swimming Pool, Brighton

When? Every Wednesday, starting from 8.00pm - 9.00pm (updated Feb 2024). The pool is closed over Christmas and New Year. Anyone whose gender expression has been keeping them from swimming (e.g. those who i

dentify as trans, genderqueer, unsure etc.). Suitable clothing
To meet health and safety requirements, what you wear in the pool needs to be made from a material that doesn't get heavier when it's wet. This means you can wear swimming costumes, trunks, rash vests, or anything made from polyester material (e.g. Lycra style clothing). As long as the material is suitable you can wear whatever you feel comfortable in. If you're unsure, ask questions here or come along to the pool one Wednesday and we can help you work out what is ok to wear in the pool. Can I bring a friend or partner? In order to keep the space safe for everyone who wants to attend, we prefer to keep these sessions just for people who see their gender expression as a barrier to swimming. Here's a bit of background on these sessions! Trans* swimming sessions started in Brighton in February 2014, as a result of the Trans Equality Scrutiny. The sessions have been organised by the LGBT Switchboard, members of the Trans Alliance, BHCC Sports Development Team, Active for Life and a group of volunteers from the community. The sessions were originally planned to take place at St Luke's swimming pool. However, they had to be temporarily be relocated to Brighton Swimming Centre due to roof damage at the pool following the storms earlier in 2014. The venue changed back to St Luke's July 2014. We originally arranged a ten week pilot scheme which would run from Feb-April 2014, but this has now been extended indefinitely. We'll be able to keep running the sessions as long as there is demand - so if you want to swim make sure to come along as regularly as possible. We can only have the sessions if we use them! Keep an eye on this page for news, updates, venue information etc. Hope to see you at the pool soon! (Remember, there is never any pressure to swim, so feel free to just come along and check out the pool before deciding if you want to have a dip.)

Hello ! Sorry for the lack of posting for, well, quite a while really... 😞 just a qu**ky post to say, in case anyone is wondering, that the trans swimming group is still running, and is on this evening, and every Wednesday, at 8pm til 9pm at St. Lukes Pools in Brighton. I'm going along tonight myself, so hope to see you there!

I will try to do the odd update so people know that its still an active group. There is no joining or anything, just turn up! Happy swimming!

Evening peoples! Well with the football on tonight I expect it will be quiet at the pool this evening 😁. But I’ll be there so if you fancy getting away from the noise hope to see you at the pool!

hey swimmerz!
So we are having a meeting with Freedom Leisure management this week, to discuss the issues with some FL staff. In addition, I wondered if anyone has any other questions or new ideas/thoughts that they might want to suggest for our swimming group going forward?? Please DM. Some have asked about swimming lessons (for non-swimmers and for developing technique)... any other thoughts?

Good to see a busy session last week with about 10 swimmers - hope to see more this week!

Dear St Luke's swimmers,

It's unfortunate that I have to write this, and I hope this message won't put anyone off from attending. But we are getting reports from some trans swimmers that a certain member of staff at St. Luke's has been causing problems with some swimmers, particularly around the wearing of t-shirts whilst in the pool, inappropriate behaviour in the changing rooms, and having a negative attitude over other issues. I myself have been harassed about taking too long to get changed and leave.

We have assurance from Freedom Leisure that for our group, an exception applies to allow the wearing of t-shirts, and we've been informed that the member of staff will no longer be scheduled to work on Wednesdays whilst an investigation is carried out. I was at swimming this week and can confirm they were not working.

From Freedom Leisure:
"We want to reassure users that as a company Freedom Leisure are taking the concerns raised very seriously and want to ensure SLSP and all of the facilities we operate and manage, feels safe and supportive for everyone"

In order to present a fuller picture of the issues experienced by some swimmers, we are putting a call out to collate anonymous statements from anyone who has felt uncomfortable or threatened by this staff member (or any other staff) - we will then have a meeting with Freedom Leisure management and the Council to discuss what steps need to be taken in this matter. We are aware that those affected have been reluctant to speak out due to safety concerns and also threats that the group might be shut down if any problems are raised - we have been assured this will NOT happen, and any statements will be anonymised before presenting to Freedom Leisure, and held in strictest confidence.

Please DM me on this page, and I will provide details of how you can submit your statement.
Thank you in advance for your support.

Hello eveyone! My names is Anna and i'm a new Admin of this group. As a regular attendee of the Trans Swimming sessions, i've been asked to re-activate this page since there's be no activity since 2019. I've set up events for each Wednesday until the end of the year so you can add to your calendar.
After a long period of only 2 or 3 swimmers, we've recently seen higher numbers which is great, but we need to keep it going with more regular swimmers or we risk losing this unique service for the trans community.
So please be proactive and tell/share with your trans friends so we can keep the buzz going!!
Hope to see you there soon!
