For some reason, people still think strength training is only for bodybuilders, 20 year olds in string vests, or people trying to become the next Gladiator.

Meanwhile in real life…..

Strength training helps you:
✔ Carry the shopping easier
✔ Keep up with your kids
✔ Run faster
✔ Reduce injury risk
✔ Stay independent as you age
✔ Feel stronger and more confident in your own body

The irony?
Most people want all of those things.

They just don’t realise strength training is one of the best ways to get them.

No, you’re not going to wake up looking like Arnold Schwarzenegger because you picked up a dumbbell twice this week Janice.

You are far more likely to become stronger, fitter, healthier and more capable.
Which sounds pretty good to me 🤷🏽‍♀️

Apparently lifting weights means we will all suddenly become f**king enormous and forget how to run 🙄

Strength training is one of the best things you can do for:
• performance
• injury prevention
• bone health
• ageing well
• everyday life

Triathlete, runner, sports person or not your body needs muscle.

Not just to perform.
But to function.

Get your arse to the Gym.

Outlaw 70.3 🏊‍♀️ 🚴‍♀️ 🏃🏽‍♀️

I think it’s so easy to get so caught up in beating yourself up about times and pbs that you can forget to enjoy it…… isn’t that the whole point we do it 🤷🏽‍♀️, of course I get we all want to do well and want to improve. But we can enjoy it along it way.

So I’m going mainly focus on the positives and be proud of what my body can actually do, and celebrate the fact I’m mediocre at 3 sports and not just 1 😂 especially as a self taught swimmer and cyclist.

🏊‍♀️ Swim - i was most worried about getting in the water as it was off a pontoon and I cannot dive 🤦🏽‍♀️. Ran and jumped 🫣 was fine goggles stayed on and the water wasn’t actually that cold definitely not as cold as I had been practicing in. Aim was to keep it comfortable, didn’t get dunked 🥳 a few kicks and slaps, got out feeling fresh. Really enjoyed the swim.

…..transitions - both in the same place and was almost 600m long, running up that grass pushing your bike with bike shoes on was the worst part! 🫠

🚴‍♀️ Bike - the bit I’m less confident with. But the first 40 miles felt really good, then my back started to hurt…. The joys of being 1 day from starting your period - the importance of training through your whole month really pays off ladies! The bike is where I took most of my time off actually got a huge pb on my bike time. I probably did go a little hard. But good to see the improvement here. Such a nice route for the most part, just a few pot holes and dodgy corners to contend with.

🏃🏽‍♀️ Run - it started to get hot and a head wind down a huge straight. The run was 3 laps which doesn’t bother me, can easily get in your head. First lap felt great then the energy started to dip, result of going harder on the bike. Still finished feeling good.

Overall I’m really pleased, can see improvements on the swim and bike!

Endurance sports just hit different, they suck you in test you, but man it’s so bloody good.

We keep improving and enjoying being capable of bashing out 70.3 miles on a Sunday morning.

🧡 Thanks coach

Most people are trying to force themselves through exercise they hate purely to lose weight.

No wonder they stop and chin it off any time that scale doesn’t budge.

Exercise should improve your life not feel like punishment for living it.

The more you enjoy it, the more likely you are to keep doing it 👌🏽

“Being fit enough to run a half marathon.”

This was my fabulous client Kirsteen’s WIN!!!

She’s a mum, step mum, runs a business, trains twice a week, and still showed up and ran her fastest half marathon in years.

No extremes.
No magic.
Just consistency, proper training, fuelling properly and strength work that most people skip.

This is what happens when you actually commit.

You become someone who can do things like this.

Like hitting pb’s and feeling bloody amazing!!

Huge well done Kirsteen, Super proud 💙 🥇

It needs to stop 🛑

Stop thinking that the smaller, skinnier, lighter, you is healthier or worth more! ✋🏽

Losing fat for health purposes YES! But let’s not take that too far…… people on all sorts of pills, jags and potions to “get skinny” ….. No!

Left Picture - Just after my 1st tour of Afghanistan 2008, that Dawn would do nothing but run and insanity with big Sean T if not at boxing camp. After that tour I was the smallest I’ve ever been at 50kg..and probably the unhealthiest.

The amount of compliments I got, telling me I looked great when I got home were mental….I did NOT lose this weight in a healthy way, funnily enough sh****ng in a hole, with minimal water, stinking food, and sweating from every or***ce on your body in unbearable heat for 6 months would do that 🫠

I was NOT healthy! I was smaller but not healthy.

I was weak, I couldn’t squat my own weight ,do a pull up, endurance wasn’t good, I could go 12 rounds in the ring and run, that was pretty much it 🤷🏽‍♀️

Right Picture - Dawn now. 10kg heavier, fitter, faster, decent endurance, stronger, healthier and a hell of a lot more knowledgeable, and I don’t need to 💩 in a bag or a hole.

Do you know what is worrying though….

We don’t see it often enough, bigging people up for getting themselves fitter, congratulating them for getting stronger, bettering their health, doing hard stuff…..instead it comes when a few pounds have been lost, dress sizes down…..regardless how they got there or how miserable they are, they will be congratulated 👀

This needs to change! Again losing fat is not bad if someone’s health is awful because of it!

And I do believe that The smallest, tiniest, skinniest you is probably NOT the best, healthiest, happiest, fittest or strongest version of YOU!

Or at least It definitely wasn’t for me!
