DERGVIEW boss Richard Clarke believes he has assembled a squad capable of finishing in the top six of the new slimline Championship One.

Following a period of restruturing, the new 12-team Championship has been given senior status and Clarke admits this year’s league campaign is going to be the toughest yet.

However, having secured the services of a number of key signings, he is quietly optmistic he has a squad capable of finishing in the top half.
In all teams will play 32 games. Teams will play each other home and away before a split in which the top six and bottom six will again play each other on a home and away basis.

Restructuring has sorted out the proverbial wheat from the chaff and on paper there doesn’t appear to be an easy games.

Clarke though is relishing the season ahead having bolstered his squad by capturing the signatures of former NI international Ivan Sproule, Ballinamallard United’s Ryan Campbell, Kyle Curran-Friel, from Limavady United, ex-Derry City midfielder Tommy McBride, defender Shane Porter. Kildrum, former player Garth Falconer and most recently goalkeeper Keelan Mulchay from Oxford United Stars.

Former Portadown and Ballinamallard United striker Richard Lecky has also returned to training following surgery to repair an injured ankle.

There have also been a number of players who have left the club including defender Lee Warnock, who has returned to Ardstraw, and Darren Higginbotham, who spent three seasons at Darragh Park.

“Following a long pre-season players just want to get playing competitively at this stage,” said Clarke.

“I have high hopes for the season ahead. I’m certainly hoping we can finish in the top six before the split.

“I certainly believe we have strengthened the squad. Last season we hadn’t enough goals in us. We drew and lost a number of games that had we the firepower we would have won.

“The priority was to improve our attacking options and we have done that.

“We have freshened up the squad significantly and it’s now up to the players to push themselves.

“It is particularly pleasing that players like Ivan Sproule, Ryan Campbell and Richard Lecky have returned to the club. And from what I have seen so far they are not going through the motions. They look to have the hunger and desire to push us on and hopefully their return has created something of stir about the town.

“Pre-season has shown that as a team we need to improve defensively and that means everyone chipping in, midfielders and forwards.
“It’s going to be highly competitive league this season and every match is certainly going to be a challenge.”

Dergview kick-off their campaign on Saturday away to last year’s runners-up HW Welders (Kick-off 3pm).
