๐ŸฅฐThank youโค๏ธโค๏ธ
To all my fabulous friends for sponsoring me on my 26 mile hike in the Peak District, Derbyshire.
Every donation is so important to support this horrible condition.

To my friends, ex pupils and current ones, neighbours, and family, colleagues (fellow instructors) and friends of my Father inlaw David's golf buddies who I've never even met!!

Thank you, thank you โค๏ธโค๏ธ for your donations ๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿ‘Œ

What an amazing day it was with the friendliest people ever, totally mind blowing experience. Trust me next time I need to train more for the hills, they were a killer and got steeper and steeper ๐Ÿ˜ณ๐Ÿ˜ณ๐Ÿ™ˆ

No photos at the end, dead phone, and probably good job as my face was like a tomato ๐Ÿ…๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ

Interesting read, how times have changed ๐Ÿค”

FEEDING BEFORE EXERCISE USED TO BE BANNED? ๐Ÿฅด๐Ÿด

Why could we not feed horses just before exercise in the past, yet nowadays we're encouraged to?

The answer is...

In the past, feeds tended to be high energy, high starch concentrates including cereal grains, grain-based mixes and nuts. They were often fed in relatively large amounts e.g. 2kg (4.5lb) per meal or more. It would not be healthy to exercise a horse straight after that sort of meal.

Nowadays, a pre-exercise meal of high-fibre chopped forage/chaff is often recommended in order to ensure the stomach isn't empty during exercise, which can lead to acid splashing and a lack of blood supply which in turn can lead to damage of sensitive stomach-lining tissue.

So the difference is down to both the type of meal and also to our understanding of stomach health.

(Endurance riders may feed during exercise, but generally in relatively small amounts).

Do you feed pre-exercise, and if so, what do you give your horse?

Often in view, sometimes acknowledged but rarely (or incorrectly) addressed! Spoiler alert ๐Ÿšจ changing the neck doesnโ€™t come from training the neck, it comes from core hypaxial engagement, to lift the back and cause positive relaxed cervical engagement. The neck of the horse is often pinpointed as an important factor in modern dressage, alongside limb action.

The conformation and muscle development of your horses neck can truly be a sign as to their mechanics of action during exercise. An overdeveloped underside of the neck (brachiocephalic muscle) is often a tell tale sign of incorrect riding and posture.

A simple exercise to do is to take a photo of your horses neck from the side, and trace over its outline. Can you see dips, bulges? Take your hand and stroke your horses neck gently with your eyes closed. Can you feel relaxation and suppleness? Is the muscle moving under your pressure, or remaining stagnant? Is your horse happy with this pressure, or do they move away from you?

Iโ€™d love to see your responses and hear how you get on! ๐Ÿค
