Kata is a teaching tool - a list of techniques that are generally practiced in sequence (with a partner for our style).
They allow techniques and principles to be grouped together in ways that let you learn more than one thing at the same time, and don't necessarily suggest these elements must be used together outside of kata, nor that they are always directly transferable to a 'real life' type of situation.
However, without the skills that kata allow you to develop, it is pretty much impossible to understand and apply them in more realistic situations.
The soft skills kata lets you practice are what makes the 'magic' work - and then you can start to play with more applications of the principles and techniques for the commonly shouted 'self-defence' usage.
To look at a kata demonstration and assume this is 'it' is severely missing the point.
The first technique taught in our first kata at Motoha Yoshin Ryu JuJutsu Club Carlisle on Rome Street looks to be escape from a wrist grab - yet the historical purpose was avoiding arrest, avoiding your hand being pinned to prevent you drawing your sword, whilst the arresting person takes your back whilst the others with them then detain you.
Yet, play with what may happen outside of kata, outside of the sword scenario, and the core technique and principle taught works really well for front bear hug escapes, overhead strikes and more.
If you want to learn the soft skills, the timing, gain better awareness of your own body and structure, to make the magic happen, then our sessions are perfect.
The learning curve is infinite, but the rewards are so worth it!
Sessions run every Tuesday at the B5 Martial Arts Academy dojo on ROME STREET, Carlisle.
