Today we have a unique feature: Sensei Dan Russell of Dansankan Dojo has been nominated by an anonymous person for whom he made an amazing impact. Read on for more.
Sensei Dan opened his first dojo in Jerusalem, israel in 1971 following on from his training in Cambridge, UK.
He achieved his Shodan in another style whilst training for many years with Sensei George Andrews. During this time , Sensei George introduced him to Goju Ryu and in 1989 he trained with Morio Higaonna during an England Gashaku.
Sensei Dan opened his second dojo in Carlisle, UK in 1986. Dansankan Carlisle is still a very busy dojo with classes for all levels and ages. With his previous military service and over 50 years of training in meditation, Tai chi, Jiujitsu and boxing, Sensei Dan has held many workshops and training courses. He has shared his knowledge in Israel where he has many pupils who still travel from afar to come and train with him.
His nominator says this:
"My personal experience is what brings me to why I am nominating Sensei Dan to feature in TOGKF.
I met Sensei Dan after being rescued from a domestic violence situation. I had suffered quietly for many years - I had never retaliated to the violence and couldn’t find my voice to even say “stop”. To say Sensei saved my life may sound dramatic, but it is very close to the truth.
Sensei waited for a few years until he felt I was ready and only then invited me to the dojo. His understanding of when and how much to push me so that I get the best of myself (and more) is what has bought me to where I am today.
After 3 years of training, many tears, sweat and blood, I know that put in any situation of violence today I would be able to defend myself.
I feel that Sensei Dan has created a family atmosphere in the dojo. All the black belts and senior students are always eager to help and advise beginners like myself, despite their own advanced ranks. They are encouraging and supportive, whilst being extraordinarily patient.
Sensei Dan helped me find my voice."
