Many of you reading this are long time loyal clients and subscribers to the Barrie Mark Personal Training Academy, or have done one of our Level 3 Personal Trainer courses. Before going on I want to thank you for your support.

As some of you may know …

In April, we rolled out our own LIVE ONLINE Level 3 Nutrition for Health Diploma in association with Wellbeing Fitness Education Centre. Because it was so successful we are now taking bookings for our second course, starting on Wednesday 31 August 2022. It’ll be taught between 6.30 and 9.00 pm on 10 consecutive Wednesdays, finishing on 2nd November. Don’t worry if you can’t make one or more of the dates. They’ll be recorded so you can watch them at home at a later date.

We are offering it to Barrie Mark Personal Training Academy members, or people who have studied for a Level 3 Personal Training course with us at a massive 40% discount - £595.00 instead of £995.00.

The teacher for the duration of the course, Joel Harfield is a highly qualified and experienced nutritionist with an MSc in Sports Nutrition. He has one clear goal - to make sure you pass and are comfortable and confident delivering nutritional advice sessions. Joel will be teaching it LIVE online, with opportunities to work together in groups, have discussions, ask questions etc. It WON’T be like many of the sub-standard internet courses, where students never actually get the chance for live interactions with tutor and fellow students. As a bonus, we’re also going to include an additional 8 hours of pre recorded lectures, which go into more detail and give added information on each of the topics covered. So you really do get value for money.

What’s more, you don’t need to have any previous qualifications to study for this course.

This week, after a bit of a break, it’s back to booklet marking for head tutor Danny.

Probably the most important thing about marking is giving feedback on how the students have done.

Instead of just giving them a ‘well done (which we do!), it’s important for them, as well as the fitness industry as a whole, to give them important points to work on going forwards.

So for transparency, here’s a snippet of the kind of thing we send back.

When the students pass a booklet (and the course), it’s obviously a really good thing. But we try to frame it as just the beginning of a journey.

We’re all learning, and we all have things to work on. It’s not a negative thing. So we try to make the experience as positive as possible for the students as they move into their careers as trainers.

Keeping with the theme of your WHY from this week, here are a couple of the best books to help you do this, in order to give you more clarity about what is truly important to you:

⚡ Book 1: Start with Why by Simon Sinek
As the name suggests, it’s a great book to start using your values and beliefs to make a difference.

It will help you realise WHY you get up and want to do what you do (in this case WHY you want to be a PT), as well as how to start doing that in order to be successful and impact more people.

⚡ Book 2: Coach to Coach by Martin Rooney
A really interesting book in the form of a story about a coach passing his knowledge on to another.

This book really gets you thinking about what your passion is, and what gets you enthused and excited!

I wrote a lot about learning about myself last week.

I wrote about continuing personal and professional development earlier in the week.

Another part of both of those things is what I like to call finding your WHY. It’s what you’re passionate and enthusiastic about. It’s the expression of your beliefs and values

It’s one of your biggest strengths, as it can be used to make your products, services, and the way you live your life in general, better. It makes you and what you do more unique. It ultimately helps you help more people in the way you want, to a greater degree, because they know what you stand for.

What’s not to like?!

To find your WHY, you need to tap into what you believe about the world, and what you value.

When it comes to why they do what they do, a lot of Personal Trainers will say something like ‘I want/like to help people.’

That’s obviously a very noble cause, and what most trainers get into the industry to do. It’s certainly a reflection of their values.

The problem with this statement is that it’s not very specific. It doesn’t go deep enough in order to dig out the real motivation and reason why a trainer does what they do, and isn’t specific enough to really demonstrate the complexity of what they value.

To go deeper, think about what really makes you excited about helping people. Add another layer and ask WHY you want to help people. This gets you closer. What excites me most about both Personal Training and teaching, is an improvement. When I see someone has stepped up their performance, even if it’s just a little bit, it makes me so happy for them. It's incredible!

So part of my WHY is giving clients and students the opportunity to improve and better themselves, and the belief that everyone should have this opportunity to be able to do this. I can widen and apply this to other aspects of my life too. For example, I am very politically involved because I believe everyone deserves these opportunities in life, and they really don’t.

At the Academy we see ongoing development as highly important.

That’s why in between courses, we give plenty of time for those involved in the course to improve their skills for future courses.

This can involve simply using session notes and reflections from a previous course in order to help the flow and impact of the next.

More significantly it can involve courses and experiences that further enhance the knowledge and effectiveness of the tutors when teaching certain topics and students.

Lead tutor Danny has previously done a more enhanced teaching qualification that has significantly improved his teaching process. Here’s the certificate he got from the awarding body that the PT course is taught under.
