We have two new Dance for Health Trainee Practitioners working with us at Rubicon Dance!

Welcome to India Sutton and Shakeera Ahmun! They are being mentored by Anwen Davies, Health & Wellbeing Mentor with Rubicon.

"My name is India Sutton. I am a Dance & Movement Practitioner based in Mid Wales. My dance roots began when I was little, I couldn't stop performing to music for my family. I was lucky to be sent to ballet, tap and jazz outside of school to nourish that part of me and eventually I was introduced to Contemporary for A-level at college.

I joined Somerset Youth Dance Company (SYDC) outside of college to gain more performance experience and widen my training. I then went on to do a Joint BA in Dance with Arts & Festivals Management at De-Montfort University in Lecester. My career as a freelancer has been predominantly project based in Wales with charities such as Impelo and Dance Blast, in various schools and community settings as-well as running my own sessions at a local studio for youth and adults. My movement practice is focused on inclusivity, curiosity, creativity, and a desire to share my joy for dancing with others.

I have always had an interest in the ways in which dance can have a positive impact on people's lives', so I had been actively searching and attending as much training , CPD and R&D as I could, hoping to reach a goal where I can incorporate that interest of 'Dance in Health' in my own practices. Coming across Rubicon's Dance In Health Practitioner training was that next step in my career I needed. Learning in a new environment of healthcare settings requiring new skills, giving me the confidence to use dance to help people thrive. I have learnt vast amounts already, it's fascinating how in depth and strong the programme is and I am so grateful to have the opportunity to be part of it".

"My name is Shakeera Ahmun, I’m a performer and practitioner based in South Wales. I began my dance foundation training at Rubicon Dance where my love of movement took off. Following my graduation, I became a freelance performer, and in 2021 I began teaching for the first time with Babyballet Cardiff teaching ages 6 months- 6 years old. After building my confidence teaching the Babyballet classes, I began teaching regularly for Arts Active Trust on their Get Moving! sessions for over 50s. I really found my niche teaching with the over 50s and have continued leading these sessions since 2024.

I recently came across a brilliant call out for the Dance for Health Trainee Practitioner role with Rubicon Dance and jumped on the opportunity. I'm learning something new from the experienced practitioners every day as well as meeting a variety of participants who benefit and thrive on the movement sessions".

Fy enw i yw India Sutton. Rydw i'n Ymarferydd Dawns a Symudiad wedi'i lleoli yng Nghanolbarth Cymru. Dechreuodd fy nhaith gyda dawns pan oeddwn i'n blentyn – doeddwn i ddim yn gallu stopio perfformio i gerddoriaeth o flaen fy nheulu! Roeddwn i'n ffodus iawn o gael mynd i wersi ballet, tap a jazz y tu allan i'r ysgol, a oedd yn meithrin y rhan honno ohonof i ac ymhen amser, ces i gyflwyniad i ddawns gyfoes ar gyfer Lefel A yn y coleg.

Ymunais â Somerset Youth Dance Company (SYDC) y tu allan i'r coleg er mwyn ennill mwy o brofiad perfformio ac ehangu fy hyfforddiant. Yna es ymlaen i astudio gradd BA ar y cyd mewn Dawns gyda Rheolaeth Gwyliau a'r Celfyddydau ym Mhrifysgol De Montfort, yng Nghaerlŷr. Mae fy ngyrfa fel gweithiwr llawrydd wedi bod yn seiliedig yn bennaf ar brosiectau ledled Cymru gydag elusennau fel Impelo a Dance Blast, mewn amrywiaeth o ysgolion a lleoliadau cymunedol yn ogystal â chynnal fy sesiynau fy hun mewn stiwdio leol ar gyfer pobl ifanc ac oedolion. Mae fy ymarfer symudiad yn canolbwyntio ar gynhwysiant, chwilfrydedd, creadigrwydd ac awydd i rannu fy nghariad at ddawnsio gydag eraill.

Rydw i wastad wedi bod â diddordeb yn y ffyrdd y gall dawns gael effaith gadarnhaol ar fywydau pobl, felly, roeddwn i wedi bod yn chwilio am, a mynychu gymaint o hyfforddiant, DPP a chyfleoedd ymchwilio a datblygu ag y gallwn i, gan obeithio cyrraedd y nod o allu ymgorffori'r diddordeb hwnnw mewn 'Dawns mewn Iechyd' yn fy ymarfer fy hun. Roedd dod ar draws hyfforddiant Ymarferydd Dawns mewn Iechyd Rubicon yn y cam nesaf hwnnw yn fy ngyrfa. Mae dysgu mewn amgylchedd newydd o leoliadau gofal iechyd sy'n gofyn am sgiliau newydd, wedi rhoi'r hyder i mi ddefnyddio dawns i helpu pobl i ffynnu. Rydw i wedi dysgu cymaint yn barod, mae'n rhyfeddol pa mor fanwl a chryf yw'r rhaglen ac rydw i mor ddiolchgar am y cyfle i fod yn rhan ohoni.

Fy enw i yw Shakeera Ahmun. Rydw i'n berfformiwr ac yn ymarferydd wedi'i lleoli yn Ne Cymru. Dechreuais fy hyfforddiant sylfaenol mewn dawns yn Rubicon Dance, lle cychwynnodd fy nghariad at symudiad. Ar ôl graddio, des i'n berfformiwr llawrydd, ac yn 2021 dechreuais ddysgu am y tro cyntaf gyda Babyballet Caerdydd, gan weithio gyda phlant rhwng 6 mis a 6 oed. Ar ôl adeiladu fy hyder wrth ddysgu'r dosbarthiadau Babyballet, dechreuais i ddysgu'n rheolaidd at gyfer Ymddiriedolaeth Actifyddion Artistig ar eu sesiynau Dechrau Symud! ar gyfer pobl dros 50 oed. Darganfyddais fy maes arbenigol i yn gweithio gyda phobl dros 50 oed ac wedi parhau i arwain y sesiynau hyn ers 2024.

Yn ddiweddar, gwelais alwad wych am Ymarferydd Dawns mewn Iechyd Dan Hyfforddiant gyda Rubicon Dance, a neidiais ar y cyfle ar unwaith. Rydw i'n dysgu rhywbeth newydd gan yr ymarferwyr profiadol bob dydd, yn ogystal â chyfarfod ag amrywiaeth o gyfranogwyr sy'n elwa ac yn ffynnu drwy'r sesiynau symudiad.

Rydw i'n edrych ymlaen yn fawr at ddatblygu fy ymarfer addysgu yn ystod y lleoliad hyfforddi hwn!

What an absolute pleasure to host Philip Piggin at Rubicon yesterday. We loved having his warmth, knowledge and passion for community dance with us as he travels across the UK (and beyond!) all the way from Canberra, Australia.

Philip was part of a wonderful programme with Rubicon back in the late 90's which focused on a south Wales and new south Wales exchange programme linking Wales and Australia where we (Ruth and Tracey) promoted community dance in Sydney, Albury Wodonga and Byron Bay.

As part of a Churchill Fellowship in 2015 Philip had a six week placement at Rubicon and joined a wide range of community dance sessions across Cardiff with all ages and abilities and in lots of different contexts.

It was very special to welcome Philip back to Rubicon yesterday where he spent time with the brilliant Anwen Davies where she was leading sessions across several wards at St David's Hospital. He also spent time with Emrys, our Outreach & Engagement Co-ordinator talking about our dance for health programme, plus news of a very exciting outreach project (more will be shared soon). Finally he was able to watch Deborah and Liz rehearsing our BTEC Dance students ready for their performances at the Weston Studio, WMC next Tuesday 16th and Wednesday 17th June.

The day ended with a visit to sunny Cardiff Bay!
