Founded in 1986/7 by Maths undergraduate Stephen Jones, the Cardiff Cobras is one of the oldest University teams in the country. Entering the British Collegiate American Football League in the 1987/8 season, they went to the College Bowl in both of their first two seasons, sharing the National Championship in CBII (the mud bowl) against the Hull Sharks after 3 quarters of extra time left the game

still scoreless, and losing by a single point in controversial circumstances to the same team in CBIII the following season. They have been to the College Bowl once more in their history, losing to Leeds in CBX (1996).

2021/22 will be the 35th Anniversary year for the Cobras and in those years they have posted a fantastic record of 26 winning seasons, play off contenders in 20, Divisional Champions in 13, Conference Champions 5 times and 1 National Championship. There has been a strong history of defensive excellence, especially in the linebacker play where a long list of top university players and GB Bulldogs representatives have been developed in Cardiff. The Cobras were only the second university team to win 100 regular season games. But even those statistics do not tell the whole story of Cobras football as many Cobras Old Boys have gone on to play, coach and develop the sport in the UK and overseas, inspired by the love of the sport nurtured in the Cobras family. The Cobras are currently experiencing one of the greatest runs of form in their history having made the playoffs in 6 out of the 7 previous years with the Cobras coming off an undefeated 2020 season, cut short just before the Division 1 South final due to Covid-19. The well balanced team of rookies and vets along with our experienced coaching staff, provides the cobras with very strong and balanced team that will keep us in title winning contention for years to come. Before we look forward to our playoff fixture vs Warwick this weekend, it’s time for our final MVP of the regular season…

Now onto the playoffs

As we prepare for our game against the Demons tomorrow, it’s time to announce our MVP from last week’s historic win against the SGS Pride…

Oliver Luck is the MVP against the Pride!

In a game where many defensive players could have won the award, one breakaway touchdown which sealed the victory and some key special teams plays meant the decision swayed in Luck’s direction.

A historic win, but not the final goal.

Cobras win away at SGS for the first time.

A massive performance from the Cobras defence means that a 4th Quarter breakaway touchdown is enough to seal victory.

Disclaimer: we know you all know the score already and this post is late, the admin has been out celebrating since we won on Friday.

The Cardiff Cobras would like to congratulate the current members of their squad that have been selected for the GB Lions for 2026.

They join a long list of Cobras, past and present who have been given the chance to represent their country.

SAM HARVEY’S MAGIC… 🗣️🗣️🗣️

Our MVP from last weekends victory against Portsmouth is our very own president, QB and the man who’s made make some questionable noises whilst commentating on the Cobras, it’s Sam Harvey.

Sam threatened the defense both with an accurate passing game and as ever posed a threat in the run.

Sam now looks to lead the side once again going into our game vs SGS.
