Say " It was one bad shoot "!

It Was One Bad Shoot, Not a Bad Archer

Let's start with a hug (a virtual one). You gave your weekend to a shoot, and it didn't go the way you hoped. Maybe the arrows drifted, the scores stung, or your form felt like it belonged to someone else. It's a horrible feeling, and every archer has been there, including the very best.

One score is a snapshot, not a verdict.

Lanny Bassham, an Olympic gold medallist in r***e shooting and the author of With Winning in Mind, teaches that our self-image drives our performance. If we let a poor result rewrite the story we tell ourselves ("I always choke"), the self-image starts to match the story. So the most important thing you can do this week is refuse to let one shoot become your identity.

Try this today:

Name it kindly. Say, "I had a tough shoot." Not, "I'm a bad archer."
Separate the result from the person. A score describes what happened on one day. It doesn't describe your ability, your future or your worth.
Talk to yourself like a friend. If a clubmate shot your score, you'd encourage them. Give yourself the same kindness.

Top archers such as Brady Ellison have spoken openly about how much of the sport is mental, and about the importance of moving on quickly from bad arrows. Nobody shoots perfectly forever, so the skill is bouncing back.

This week's takeaway: Be gentle with yourself first. You can't build a strong week on top of self-criticism.
