📣📣 Important update about access to Clyde Cycle Park.
We've got some difficult news to share. Due to a number of incidents over the past two months, we've made the decision to restrict public access to the Parkfor the time being. This is due to anti-social behaviour leading to broken glass, oil and other debris on the track from usage by motocross and quad bikes, despite noticessaying any motorised usage is not permitted. Although we inspect the track before sessions, oil and grease are difficult to remove and (like glass and dogmess etc) present a safety hazard.
We have some CCTV, but recently one of the cameras was disabled by people using the track for quadbike/motocross usage. We have spoken to the local police team about this, and they are including the park on their patrols, but clearly these are intermittent.
A second issue is that the new track is now being used by cycle clubs for racepractice, mainly in the evenings. Given that race cyclists can reach speeds of 25+kph, we need to control access during club sessions to avoid accidents through collisions whether with young people, adults or dogs. We hope the closures will be temporary. Clyde Cycle Park is a charity started and run by local volunteers, and we have always intended it as a facility forthe whole community. It has taken us five years to raise the money to build the Park. We welcome its usage by local people, especially children, and we want to continue providing public access. To do so, we are looking into the option of having electronic card access via the pedestrian gates with cards which we would give to local people. We are also applying for more funding to enable staffed opening of the Park for more hours, ideally seven days a week. However, grants and sponsorship are becoming very difficult to get. We have been leafleting the local area to explain the changes directly to localresidents. If you have questions or hear concerns from others, please feel free to share this post or point people to our website. Thank you for your understanding. This decision wasn’t taken lightly, and wehope you will bear with us while we find solutions to enable public access. 🚴
