What if the asana isn’t actually the peak of your yoga practice?
It’s easy to think this is the practice.
The asana.
The strength.
The flexibility.
The peak pose.
The beautiful shapes.
And they are wonderful.
For many of us, they are the way in to yoga — the doorway that draws us towards something deeper.
But to see them as the whole practice is to see only part of the story.
Because the real “peak”, for want of a better word, often happens in between the asana.
In between the breaths.
In the stillness of Savasana.
In seated meditation.
And sometimes, it happens long after you’ve rolled up your mat and stepped back into your day.
You’re not quite sure what has shifted.
You just know something has.
Traditionally, the asana were practised to prepare the body for seated meditation — creating a steady, comfortable seat.
So whilst the asana is a beautiful, exciting and intriguing part of the story, perhaps she isn’t the main character.
The main character slips quietly in between the shapes.
Between the breaths.
Nesting down towards the heart.
And little by little, you begin to notice her.
The growing ease.
The greater equilibrium.
The pull to sit a little longer in stillness.
The quiet wisdom unfolding within you.
You feel her as you become more and more at home in this beautiful, glorious body of yours.
And then the practice begins to ripple outwards.
Into how you meet yourself.
How you respond.
How you breathe through the difficult moments.
How you move through your days.
So yes — practise the shapes.
Let them be your way in. Learn from them. Be inspired by them. Let them build focus, discipline, awareness and presence.
But then stay for the real gift.
The gift of becoming a little more at home within yourself.
A little more at ease.
A little more… you. 🤍
