The Pioneers of Abbey United - Charles Pink

Throughout the season in the Cambridge United programme there has been an series of articles about the players who played for Abbey United before the First World war.

If you are related to any of the players please contact
[email protected]

We hope you enjoy the series

In this series of articles profiling the boys who played for Abbey United before the First World War, the church of St Andrew on Newmarket Road – better known as the Abbey Church – is mentioned frequently.

That’s appropriate, of course: the church is accepted as our club’s birthplace. The story is that its curate organised games for lads who either sang in the church’s choir or attended its Sunday school.

'The Abbey - Our Stadium, Our Home' Is a new book being produced by David Shields and Stuart Byford, David is a photographer who has been capturing stadiums for over twenty years, Stuart is a graphic designer and drone photographer. Both are passionate about football ... and the homes they are played in.
The book will feature photographs of this much-loved stadium and contributions from supporters, staff and players.

They are looking for a couple of paragraphs answering the question ...

'What does the Abbey Stadium mean to you'

For more information, David and Stuart can be contacted at ...

Examples of quotes from the QPR book below -

'Loftus Road gives me the feeling of being at home. Beginning with walking off the Tube at Shepherd’s Bush Market or White City and knowing straight away that this is where I belong. The walk down the Uxbridge Road, The White Horse and the Crown and Sceptre to name but a few elements of my habitual journey with my Dad Martin to Loftus Road. Walking through the streets of West London with the floodlights peering over the old long-standing houses and imagining the impending joy and passion to come; alongside several thousand like-minded folk who each have their own pre match rituals, just like mine. All of us there, week in week out, for our one unanimous love'
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
'I’ve been coming to Loftus Road for over. 50 years as a supporter , 20 of those years as an employee too and it is safe to say it is like a second home . As I walk around the empty stadium or sit in the stands eating lunch I often reflect and revisit memories of players and matches long gone . It’s sometimes hard to believe that the echoing stands and emptiness are filled with such noise and warmth from the QPR family on a matchday. It is a very special place to anyone who has QPR in their dna'
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
'My first ever trip to Loftus Road was an unremarkable 0-0 draw against Watford. 12 April 1982. But my abiding memory of the game is of a bloke in the South Africa Road Stand taking great exception to the style of football deployed by Graham Taylor's side and then spending 90 minutes letting him know - using words that a seven year old football obsessive had never heard before. I was hooked!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Modern-day football stadia may have more legroom, better beer on offer at half-time, plumbing that works when more than 10 people wash their hands at the same time, but none of them come close to an energy-charged Loftus Road. Standing in the pouring rain watching a rare FA Cup tie win over Arsenal, Paul Furlong's winner against Oldham in the play-off semi final, the sense of joy, relief and tearful delight when the Championship title was lifted in 2011 are all memories that will live with me forever'

Following on from our last successful event, Cambridge United Foundation, has secured funding from NHS Central East Integrated Care Board, to deliver through MYPSA Tests to make available PSA blood tests at the Cledara Abbey Stadium. The first session will be on 15th July, between 1.00pm and 5.30pm. Our community café will also be open, where a nurse consultant will available to talk to about any concerns.

You will need to be between 40 and 80 years of age to be eligible for a test. Sign-up and book an appointment now by scanning the QR code below. https://cufcf.mypsatests.org.uk

The PSA test can help diagnose possible prostate problems, including prostate cancer, and indicate if you should consult your GP. Lots of things can affect the level of PSA in your blood, such as rigorous exercise before a test or other health issues, and so a test is only a starting point in finding out if you have a problem.

To find out if a PSA Test is right for you, please read the information in the booking form or read

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men, but the earlier you find it, the easier it is to treat. For any assistance in making a booking, please contact the MyPSA Tests office on 01926 419959 or contact [email protected]
