Which cargo bike seat is right for your child?

The best seating option depends on your child’s age, development and the cargo bike model you choose.

For babies, some cargo bikes can be fitted with an approved reclined infant seat or a compatible car-seat adapter. Manufacturer guidance varies, but some systems advise waiting until a baby is at least three months old because of the vibrations involved. Always follow the guidance for your exact bike and seat, and seek advice from a healthcare professional before travelling with a young baby.

As children grow, the setup can adapt with them. Depending on the bike, children aged around two and over may be comfortable in a suitable seat in the front box or on a rear bench, with the correct restraints and protection.

One of the real benefits of a cargo bike is that many models can be configured to carry more than one child, making it possible for siblings or friends to enjoy the journey together. Always follow the bike manufacturer’s passenger, seating and weight limits.

How much does a cargo bike cost, and is it worth it?

The upfront cost can feel significant, but there are ways to make it more manageable. If your employer offers a Cycle to Work scheme, you may be able to save through salary sacrifice. We also offer 0% finance on eligible purchases.

When we added up the purchase and running costs using our own example, it came to around £1.10 per mile. Your figure will depend on the bike, how often you ride, servicing costs and how long you own it, but we think a cargo bike can offer fantastic value when it becomes part of everyday life.

Always secure your load before setting off, remember that your bike is longer than a standard bike and stop a little earlier at junctions. Leave enough space when pulling up beside crossing buttons so you can reach them easily too.
