At Mini Athletics, we focus on having fun through physical play. Developed by a primary PE teacher and an athletic development coach, Mini Athletics is the start of your child’s fantastic journey in sporting movement. Children are introduced to the basics of athletic movement skills (running, jumping and throwing) in a play-based yet structured format. Your child will be encouraged to develop athletic skills that are fundamental to their early physical development. It is a great opportunity to bond with your child through fun activities.

This is imagination done right.

A great coach doesn’t say, “this is what we’re doing” and then send the children off to do it.

They get involved.
They react.
They exaggerate.
They double down on the story and bring the imagination to life.

That excitement keeps a child engaged, moving, reacting and repeating skills without it ever feeling like a drill.

The idea might sound simple — and saying “we use imagination” is very easy.

Bringing it to life so the child becomes completely absorbed in it is the skill.

Bringing that imagination to life for them is a completely different skill.

That’s where an Amazineer comes in.

They’re the coach willing to be just silly enough that a group of children suddenly want to know what’s happening next.

A run isn’t always just a run.

Something might be chasing them.

They might be delivering something incredibly important.

There may suddenly be fences in the way that need to be jumped over.

But while the children are completely absorbed in it, the Amazineer is still coaching.

Who needs another demonstration?

Who needs that little boost to have a go?

Who has already mastered it and needs the cones moved further away?

Who needs a completely different challenge?

The imagination gets them interested.

The coaching makes sure that interest actually goes somewhere.

Because getting children excited is only the beginning.

Knowing what to do with that excitement is the skill.

Children love to move. They just need to find their reason why.

Some will give everything a go straight away.

Some are quieter and need to watch first.

Some need to see how an activity works before they feel ready to join in.

Some just love running.

Some could throw all day.

Some want to jump over everything in sight.

And some need a story, a challenge, a bit of imagination or the right encouragement before movement suddenly clicks.

They are all different.

That’s why we don’t expect every child to enjoy movement in the same way.

Sometimes the reason is the race.
Sometimes it’s the throw.
Sometimes it’s the jump.
Sometimes it’s the story.

They just need to find their reason why.

It’s easy to say you use imagination in children’s sport.

It’s much harder to create an environment where children are so caught up in the game that they don’t even realise how much they’re learning.

Today a potential new Amazineer came to observe Coach Ryan running Aeroplane Week in Trumpington.

They got it straight away.

To us, the children are running, jumping, balancing, changing direction and developing physical literacy.

To them?

They’re aeroplanes.

They’re playing. They’re imagining. They’re completely involved in the story.

And without even realising it, they’re learning how to move.

That’s Mini Athletics.

We don’t just add imagination to exercise.

We create a world children want to move in.

September has a funny way of making you realise how quickly they’re growing.

Maybe they’ve just started school.

Maybe school still feels a long way off.

Either way, the confidence to listen to someone new, wait for a turn, try something independently and have another go when it doesn’t quite work doesn’t suddenly appear on their first day.

It develops through opportunities to practise.

That’s a huge part of what happens at Mini Athletics.

We run. We jump. We throw. We play some brilliant games.

Not every child walks into a new class and joins in straight away.

Some watch first.
Some stay close to their grown-up.
