EVER BEEN FOR A GAIT ANALYSIS WHERE THEY'VE TOLD YOU THAT YOUR CURRENT TRAINERS ARE PERFECT?

Thought not. However, this is exactly what happened at the end of my last gait analysis.

Lisa came to me via a family recommendation because she was getting hip pain when running, and thought a gait analysis may help in resolving the issue.

Upon arrival it was fairly evident early on that it wasn't the running style, or trainers that were the issue, but instead a considerable amount of tightness in her left glute, and a lack of separation in her SI joint.

We ploughed on with the gait analysis anyway, just to be sure, but as you can see from the images Lisa's gait is pretty good. Granted, there's a small heel strike, and a slight outward landing angle of her right foot, but in the main, nothing major.

So, what was my recommendation? Some new £140 trainers? Of course not. Instead some targeted stretches and lifestyle changes, for instance, not sleeping with legs tucked up which creates a build up tension in the hip throughout the night.

This is the first gait analysis I was able to conduct since the easing of lockdown restrictions. My client suffered a fairly nasty ankle injured whilst playing rugby, which required several surgeries, and a hefty amount of rehab, some of which was conducted by myself (MJH Sports Massage). Over the past few months he has reached a point in his recovery where he can begin road running. However, prior to commencing this we both agreed that it was best he had a gait analysis to ensure that he had the correct footwear, and was aware of any issue(s) that may affect his ankle.

After looking at the video footage, it was noted that his left (operated on) ankle was still slightly weak and over-pronated. Another problem (as you can see from the images) was his heel strike. Up to 20 degrees on his right foot, and 24 degrees on his left.

He has since been recommened an insole that will aid in stabilising his ankle, as well as a specific pair of running shoes that offer greater support when walking/running.

This was quite possibly the most challenging, and complex gait analysis I've done, since starting the business in September 2019.

However, it was also the main reason I started this business, as I would go out on a limb and say that most high street shops that provide free gait analysis (it's free for a reason) would not be picking up these issues.

Yes, the over-pronation, inward landing angle, and heel strike and clear for all to see, but they aren't the main concern. The first thing to note is the severe inward collapse of the right knee on landing, so much so that the right knee actually impacts the left knee. You will also notice that when the knee collapses the entire upper body leans heavily to the right. Not difficult to see why this client was suffering from significant hip pain.

The knee was collapsing due to significant muscle wastage in the right quadricep, which had been caused by an operation on a broken femur earlier in life.

Realistically, would all of these things have been taken into account from a sports store gait analysis, and what advice would have been given to remedy the issue(s) 🤷‍♂️.

RETURN OF THE HEEL STRIKER!!!

Yesterday I was able resume conducting gait analysis tests (whilst maintaining a safe social distance, of course), and it was very unsurprising that the first issue I came across was in fact one of the most common.

That being a heel strike. In this case a whopping 27 degrees on one leg, and 24 degrees on the other.

This client had been complaining of calf pain when going for long walks, and given the images below it's not difficult to see why. Heel striking of this magnitude will put excessive amounts of force through the heel, and into the achillies, calf, and sometimes shin. Causing those areas to become tight and fatigue rather quickly.

Most people tend to heel strike because they are 'over-reaching' with their stride. This is something that I will be going into greater detail with over the coming week.

That's right...... from next Monday (15th June) I am open for business 🏃‍♂️🏃‍♀️!

As social distancing can be maintained throughout the entire session, I am now taking bookings for detailed gait analysis.

However, there will be some subtle changes to keep inline with social distancing guidelines.

• Upon arrival you will given hand sanitizer that you MUST apply.

• I will be contacting every client 24/48 hours prior to your appointment, to ensure that you, or any of your household aren't suffering from any of the known Covid-19 symptoms.

• I will open and close any doors to limit your contact.

• The chair in the clinic has been removed, as it is unable to be deep cleaned (not that you'll be doing much sitting).

• I am still unable to conduct gait analysis tests of those of you who are currently shielding, or fall into the vulnerable category.

• Unfortunately the bathroom is currently out of bounds, so please use your own 'facilities' before arriving.

At present I will also be unable to conduct certain range of movement and resistance tests, therefore I am offering a 20% discount, making all gait analysis tests now £20, instead of the normal £25. You will receive an email containing all your results within 72 hours of the conclusion of your session.

To quote the great Forrest Gump, "I just felt like running" 🏃‍♂️.

Trying to take the positives from isolation, it's given me the time to restart the couch to 5k program. Now anyone who knows me will attest, I am not a cardio fan, much prefer lifting heavy bits of metal, which is why I sound like Darth Vader 😂, so I can only apologise. However, let's all be grateful that we can still get outside and take in some of that lovely fresh Cornish air (with a slight tinge of cow manure).

THE PERFECT LANDING 👣!

Any of you that I have viewed my previous gait analysis reviews, will know how common it is for a lot of my clients to 'heel strike'. So I thought I would show you an example of better landing position, from a client who came to me this week.

Notice how her right foot strikes the ground, with the mid to front part of her foot landing first. This is a far more efficient way to run, as you carry your momentum forward. When you heel strike you theoretically 'put the breaks on', and then have to re-engage your muscles to gather speed once again.

If you want to know more about your running style, then simply send me a message, and get yourself booked in.

This gait analysis was from earlier this week. My client came to me as they are running their first Marathon in May, and wanted to be sure that the running shoes they were about to purchase were beneficial, and suitable for her running style.

This was in fact one of the easier gait analysis' that I've had to do.She was showing a slight over-pronation in both ankles, but nothing to severe, so a simply support style running shoe will remedy that issue.

Although when conducting various range of movement tests, my client was made aware that she had some tightness in her groins and hips, as well as dysfunction in her SI joint. All of this could lead to back pain as she ups her miles closer to the marathon. She was advised several stretches to do 3 times a week, which would stop any further tightness in these areas.
