Most recreational players think power comes from the arm.

It doesnโ€™t.

The real engine of the serve is shoulder over shoulder.

Watch the great servers closely and youโ€™ll notice something:
the front shoulder lifts upโ€ฆ while the hitting shoulder drops underneath it.

That creates the tilt needed for upward explosion.

And noโ€ฆ this does NOT mean bending the back.

The shape comes from the โ€œVโ€ created between:
โ€ข the legs
โ€ข the trunk
โ€ข the torso

This helps the body get the power from the ground up.

The toss can still move forward.

But the body must stay loaded behind it.

Without shoulder over shoulder, the serve becomes:
โ€ข flat
โ€ข arm-dominant
โ€ข rushed
โ€ข and forced

You donโ€™t muscle the serve.

You build the throw from the ground up.

โฌ†๏ธ front shoulder up
โฌ‡๏ธ hitting shoulder down
โžก๏ธ then explode upward

Thatโ€™s why great servers look effortless while producing huge power.

Tilt back. Drive up.

Most players struggle at the net not because of their handsโ€ฆ but because of their shape and timing. Keep your racket head up before, during, and after contact โ€” this alone gives you control and stops the ball dipping into the net. Step into the ball, meet it out in front, and youโ€™ll instantly feel more solid. Add a slight touch of slice and suddenly the volley stays low, controlled, and difficult to deal with.

Most players are told to โ€œpronateโ€โ€ฆ

But when they try?

๐Ÿ‘‰ They end up pancaking the serve

๐Ÿง  The issue isnโ€™t pronationโ€ฆ

๐Ÿ‘‰ Itโ€™s the grip

You need a continental (chopper) grip
๐Ÿ‘‰ Base knuckle on the 2nd bevel

This allows the racket to move correctly through the swing.

๐Ÿ‘€ Look at the sequence
1. Strings to the side in trophy
2. Then the racket moves to edge
3. From there, the forearm rotates
4. And the racket finishes flat through the ball

๐Ÿ‘‰ Thatโ€™s pronationโ€”nothing forced, just a natural rotation

๐Ÿ› ๏ธ How to practise it
Start slowly without the ball
Feel the racket go side โ†’ edge โ†’ flat
Keep the grip the same throughout

๐Ÿ‘‰ Repeat it until it starts to feel natural

๐ŸŽฏ Keep it simple

๐Ÿ‘‰ Get the grip right
๐Ÿ‘‰ Train the motion

It will feel awkward at firstโ€ฆ thatโ€™s a good thing.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Practice, practice, practice

Watch how the best in the world do it โ€” simple, clean, and effective.

1๏ธโƒฃ He steps into the volley
Federer doesnโ€™t stay still
He moves forward into the ball
Weight transfers through the shot

๐Ÿ‘‰ This gives:

Stability
Control
Power

Youโ€™re not reaching for the ball โ€” youโ€™re going to meet it

2๏ธโƒฃ He makes contact out in front
The ball is well in front of his body
Arms are extended but relaxed

๐Ÿ‘‰ Why this matters:

More control
Better direction
Cleaner contact

If the ball is beside youโ€ฆ youโ€™re already late

3๏ธโƒฃ He keeps the racket head up
Racket is above the wrist
Face is slightly open and stable
No wrist flick

๐Ÿ‘‰ This helps:

Lift the ball over the net
Keep the volley controlled
Add a natural touch of slice
Keep the ball low after the bounce

Low racket head = low ball = mistake

๐ŸŽฏ Simple Volley Formula

๐Ÿ‘‰ Step in
๐Ÿ‘‰ In front
๐Ÿ‘‰ Racket head up

๐Ÿง  Final Thought

At the net, you donโ€™t have time to fix things late.

Good volleys are made early โ€” with your feet, and your hands.
