I am happy to report the kingfisher escaped!
Yesterday, a sparrowhawk cruised across the river, right in front of us, and into a bush. It immediately reappeared in hot pursuit of a kingfisher! The kingfisher zigzagged around the river at water level and, several times, dived into the water only to reappear flying in the opposite direction. All the while, the sparrowhawk, only a couple of feet above, twisting and turning and trying to get closer. After a few seconds the kingfisher made it into cover on the river bank and the sparrowhawk cruised on down the river like nothing had ever happened. Just WOW!
