Regular farrier appointments aren't a luxury, they are a necessity for your equine companion's lifelong welfare.

Every extra 1cm of toe length results in -

Right hand images 4 weeks after left hand images. Notice how uniform the dorsal wall has become and the bevel on the ground surface continues toe to heel compared to left images. This horse has been barefoot since beginning of the year worked on soft surfaces. If shod it would need shoes and frog support pads. Majority of all horse limb related issues stem from compromised frog function with shoeing not adequately executed throughout a horses life.

Hoofcare of the individual horse works on a spectrum relative to it's breed, environment and work. If horses can't go barefoot then they often require frog/digital support with aid of frog support pads to share ground reaction forces more centrally through the limb away from the heels, through the frog and up the limb. No matter how well a conventional steel shoe is applied, the ground reaction forces are generally forced more directly to the heel area

N°1 Rule - hoof function

Whether barefoot or with shoes, the horses hoof structures should never be forced to take the work and load independently. The heels and the frog are weight sharing structures as proven here with this horse (with compromised confirmation) transitioning to barefoot.

Middle image a maintenance trim less then two weeks later

Bottom image just 20 days after shoe removal. You can see how mych the medical heel has opened out. The lateral cartilages have settled and the heels and frog have become weight sharing
