The North Wales Youth Climbing Academy (NWYCA), is an Academy aimed at talented young climbers based in North Wales. The Academy provides high quality coaching and opportunities to develop coaching skills to coaches who operate in the many climbing clubs in the area. The academy is supported by the BMC, North West Wales Outdoor Partnership, the climbing walls across the region and several sponsors
from the outdoor businesses in the area. Membership
Membership of the Academy is open to children and young people until the year of their 18th birthday who reside in North Wales who have attained a standard in their climbing that is significantly above the average amongst their peers, or who have shown particular attitude and maturity towards progression and are keen to apply themselves to improving further. Selection Process
Selection is done via a number of avenues including competition results, open trial days, invitations for current known climbers, and referral by climbing walls and/or clubs. Potential members will be invited to a mid-week coaching session. Invitation for membership will be by recommendation by the Head Coach, with the final decision made by the Academy’s Committee. The Academy year follows the academic year, September to August each year; coaching and training sessions are during school term. In the summer, the Academy will take the Youth Members to climb outdoors. The Academy is not-for profit and the membership fees are paid termly.
