He’s safely home! A bit worse for wear but in one piece thank goodness. John is so grateful for all the support he has had. Here is his last post - for now! (please not again!😂😂):

Well I’ve been wet, cold, warm, dry, and wind blown by turn over the last week or so. But I got it finished! As you will see from the photo below of my gps data I have covered 842km and 10,500m of total ascent (6.5 miles!). I’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who was kind enough to donate. It was a tough few days but your support and donations helped me keep going when things were difficult ( which they frequently were!). The total donations up to now stand at £1,560 for Alzheimer’s which is fantastic and hopefully will make some contribution to an eventual cure for this dreadful disease.

This was his message earlier today:

Mission almost accomplished! John did a mega turn on the bike today to give him just a few (comparatively!) miles to do tomorrow morning. As you will see below he is having a little celebration this evening. Here’s his post from today.

I'm nearly done! I didn't want to leave to many Kms to do tomorrow, so I decided to go as far as I could today! Got away at 5:15am, and rode all day, finishing at Dingwall, where I found a great little campsite, with the added bonus of a nice little pub around the corner! I racked up 152kms , leaving me around 25 left for tomorrow morning. I didn't escape the mandatory rain though! There was a few hours of varying intensity, coupled with some strong cross headwinds for a while (Not what you want on the A9!) anyway, I'm just having a nice dinner in the pub, with a well earned beer! Job done! Start driving home tomorrow!

A better day today as you’ll see from John’s post below. He’s nearly there now (well I say this but he still has 160k or so to go 😱) and the highlight today is that he is camping near a pub and so should get a proper meal tonight. Here’s what he has to say today:

Well here we go again! Packed up in the rain, rode in the rain! Actually just a couple of hours between about 7 -9 an going over the mountain road from Tongue to Thurso. On the road at 6am again, to get the miles in! I managed 136 km in 8 hours of riding today, and that's much more like the time I would expect it to take! I'm at Wick now, on the East coast of Scotland, and the terrain is much easier than the West and North coasts. I've got 160 km left to get to Inverness, so I'm going to knock off maybe 120 of that tomorrow ,and finish off by around 9 Tuesday morning . Constant 20% plus gradients does tend to reduce your average speed!

I’m feeling rather guilty I’ve had a lovely afternoon in the sun at a family party. John however has by the sound of it been pedalling through horrible weather and difficult terrain. The photo below is a stark contrast to the weather here at home today. But I guess what do you expect in the far north of Scotland, even if it is the end of June 😬.
Here’s John’s report for the day:

It's been another cold damp and windy day up here. I was on the road at 5 :30am, and the terrain was rugged to say the least! I got my head down and just kept ploughing on. Eventually I reached Tongue, which was my aim for the day. 135km done, and hopefully I'll reach John o groat's tomorrow ! Hope the weather is better!

Well we have two for the price of one today! Two photos with captions below.
Phone signal continues to be a bit of a problem but I have spoken to John today and he is finding it very tough going. Here is how he described it:

It peed down all last night, still raining and blowing AND cold when I got going at 5:45. I was freezing, and no fluids left! I just kept going until I got to Ullapool, where the kind owner let me thaw out before bringing me a monster sized breakfast wrap, and hot coffee! Anyway, I rode on through a mixture of dry, and mountain squalls, which were freezing, sometimes with hail mixed in! Anyway here I am 140km later feeling a lot better than I did this morning!

Thanks all for your support and good wishes.

Cycling the North Coast 500 (yes 500 miles!) for Alzheimer’s Society.

First photo was last night’s campsite - right by a river and surrounded by midges 😂.
Second one is tonight’s campsite. The kind campsite owner parked his car alongside to act as a windbreak.

You’re going to have to bear with me a bit on this journey - John seems to have chosen a route with so far very little consistent phone signal. So below is his photo from the start yesterday and his report at the end of the day.
What I can tell you about today is that he got soaking wet. Did you see the forecast yesterday for North West Scotland? I did and my heart sank a bit.
He seems to be incommunicado again atm but hoping for some contact either later or tomorrow.
This is what John sent me re yesterday:

Well, first day completed and 135km done! I was hoping for a bit further, but the Applecross Pass just about finished me! It's 10km of constant climbing, going from sea level to 650 metres! After 120 km, it was a killer!

Evening all. I don’t have a photo for you today so I’m posting a map of the North Coast 500 route that John will be following. He set out from Inverness Castle early this morning and had a hard day’s cycling across to Applecross on the other coast. He has been out of range of phone signal for most of the day and doesn’t seem to have internet access either so has not been able to send me photos or a message. I do know that today’s ride was one he was anticipating with a bit of trepidation due to the steep gradient of the Applecross Pass so I hope he’s now resting his little legs ready for tomorrow. X

He’s finally made it to Inverness! And that’s just the start - tomorrow he’s off on his bike, starting at Inverness castle and the 500 mile cycle ride begins.
I’m going to flag up his fundraising page each day. Not expecting anyone to donate more but in case any of you share the post with friends and they feel they would like to donate. It’s a great cause 😀.

Bike is all rigged and ready to roll! I hope the cycling is easier than the driving! 250 miles yesterday, and 300 today!

First pic - So off he went at around 10am. Complete with a big box of blueberry muffins, some ham rolls and a flask of coffee.
Second pic - he’s arrived at his campsite half way to Inverness. He drives the rest of the way tomorrow and then sets off on his bike from Inverness castle on Wednesday morning to cycle his gruelling 500 miles.
I did laugh at the size of his tent on the pitch 😂😂.
Me, I’m off to Zumba………….xx

So all this is going on John’s bike or in his bike panniers. He’s going to he totally self sufficient - with a tent, camping stove, cooking pot etc and of course as you know many pot noodles.
He’s off tomorrow, taking 2 days to drive up to Inverness. The official start of the course is Inverness Castle and he will be leaving from there on Wednesday morning.
Lots more photos and info to come as he cycles along.
Thanks again for your kindness and support.
You can check how well he’s done with donations on his donation nation page

Stay tuned for updates! Xx

Another day, another cycle training ride!
Well it’s only a week and a half until he starts. It’s been a long time coming but he’s needed to do a lot of training. His long training rides now are 4hours or so - that’s only half of what he will be doing each day on the North Coast 500.
John is so grateful for all your donations ( as you may know he doesn’t do Facebook) and it’s really spurring him on to keep going. If anyone should have any more spare pennies the link for donation is
www.justgiving.com/page/john-kehoe-6
and as you may know he’s doing it for The Alzheimers Society.
I’ll be updating every few days now and then hoping to do a daily update when he’s on the ride like I did before. Xx
