More Caerleon Petanque players in winning ways - its the big weekend for petanque in North Wales at Llysfaen Petanque Club. Yesterday was the Open Doubles, with our players taking all 3 top spots in a field of 26 teams: Gill Greenwell (playing with Sean Smith ) took the Gold, with Peter Stahl and Jane Stahl taking Silver. Roger Green took third place with his partner. Good luck all for today.

A good couple of weekends for Caerleon Petanque players - Tansy was runner-up with Kym Sta in the National Women's Doubles losing 12-13 in a tight final. The following weekend, Tansy took the National Women's Shooting title, beating Jayne Dunn in another close final. An honorary mention to Kon who got the by far the highest score in the opening round of the shooting and got to the Semis for the men. Jayne had quite the weekend of it, playing strongly the following day in the National Women's Singles where she again took runners-up spot (sorry, no pic)

It was a good weekend for Carrleon women with 3 out of 4 women in the semis of the Shooting, (Tansy, Gill and Jayne) and two in the semis of the Singles - Gail and Jayne - making it a good showing for the women.

We are very proud of our Bastille Weekend which has grown from a small in-club event, to a full weekend of cheerful & competitive pétanque - so popular that we have to create extra pistes for our visitors! In the past few years we’ve welcomed players from across Wales, the UK and Europe (Finland, Germany, Spain, Sweden & France so far). We are based at Caerleon RFC, and we honour the competitive, community-focused nature of the Rugby Club in the spirit of our tournament.

SOLD OUT!!!! Saturday 11th July is our Bastille Mêlée: This event is opened to our club members first of all, and then offered to our ‘club friends’ (people who have played in it for several years and those who always bang out good fancy dress!) - for a second year it is sold out before being able to offer it more widely. We play 4 games, with a raffle and our legendary mad shooting competition during the break. French themed fancy dress is strongly encouraged (and rewarded!). A generous buffet lunch is included in the entry fee, and there are a range of prizes on offer - including the coveted “Most Average” prize. This event is sold out - capped at 90 entries, but we are holding a waiting list for those who might like to play. Contact Barbara (see below) if you’d like to add your name to the list.
Registration is 10.00-10.15am.

Sunday 12th July is the Caerleon Open Triples: this is a competitive event, but still played with friendship foremost. All entry fees go back in prizes, and this is topped up by the club. The prize pot increases with entries but last year we had £150 first prize and 3 other cash prizes for those in 1st and 2nd of the Gold and Silver comps. Teams of 4 are welcome. Format depends on number of entries, but will consist of a snake or pools in the morning, followed by knockout in the afternoon so everyone will have a minimum of 4 games.

We don’t offer lunch so please bring your own – although the Rich Bean café will be open all day and they serve good coffee as well as lunch and snacks. Again, we have had some advance booking from past teams, so don’t snooze on this one!
Entry is £21 per team.
Registration is 9.15-9.30am.

Both events are unlicensed, so all players are welcome. Entry is by pre-payment only ( contact [email protected]).

The bar will be open from 12pm each day (note that you are not permitted to bring your own alcoholic drinks) and the Rich Bean coffee shop will be open - especially handy for grabbing lunch on the Sunday.

Janet kindly supplied thiscreport of a recent friendly away trip.

"Eighteen of us enjoyed a wonderful Invitation Day at the West Hereford Pétanque Club, on a day that was sunny, cold and windy — the full British weather package - all at once. We paused only for a very welcome afternoon tea. The cakes vanished at a speed that would put most athletes to shame.

Caerleon finished with a strong and well‑earned 14–10 win — a score we will, of course, mention casually and repeatedly for the foreseeable future.

All in all, it was a splendid day: excellent company, excellent hospitality, and pétanque played with both good humour and good spirit. We look forward to continuing our warm relationship with this welcoming club — and of course, to returning the favour when they come to visit us next.

Thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to such a memorable occasion."
