It took me 3 years to get Claire LaRue on to the mats to do BJJ. One of the hardest working people in Blue Wave she is only the 4th woman to achieve purple belt in over 20 years of Bjj in the team . It’s said that if you start training only 8 percent will make Blue and then less than 10 percent of those will make Purple. It’s an amazing achievement when your a single Mum with two teenagers and a big responsible job. Congratulations Claire

Three years ago, she was a tiny tot, unsure of her place, sitting quietly beside her coach.

Three years later, after hundreds of hours on the mats, countless lessons, bumps, bruises and moments of resilience, I saw something that made me incredibly proud.

Today she took a hard fall. It knocked the wind out of her and left her shaken.

But what stood out wasn’t the fall itself.

This was the little girl who barely spoke to during her first year of training. Today, she clearly advocated for herself. She told coach what had happened, explained how she was feeling, communicated what she needed and accepted help when it was offered.

When she was ready, she made her own way back. Back to a trusted adult. A teacher. An advocate. A safe person in her corner.

As coaches, we only get small moments in these children’s lives, but every one of them matters. Each child who walks onto our mats is unique, and every one deserves to be seen, heard and supported.

So while I’m incredibly proud of Miss N today, I’m also quietly proud of the small part I’ve played in helping her get here.

Being a coach is a privilege. To be trusted by both parents and children. To help young people grow in confidence, learn resilience, find their voice and discover what they’re capable of.

The children who place their trust in us deserve our very best, every single time we step onto the mats.

Today was a reminder that sometimes the biggest victories have nothing to do with sport at all.
