With summer in full swing, lets go through 5 tips to help you stay on top of your game!

1. Hydration - If your pi***ng Wotsits you need more water

Don't wait until you have started working out to worry about being hydrated! You should be thinking hydration from the moment you wake up to the moment you sleep. Remember the average life expectancy is only 3 days, that just resets every time you have a drink!

2. Keep expectations realistic

Your body is already struggling with the heat, you're probably not going to RX and PB every workout but that is okay! Focus more on your effort output than the numbers especially in a heatwave!

3. You still need to warm up

I know you are already really warm from walking to the gym, sometimes even if that's just from your car! BUT you still need to help prepare your joints and nervous systems. Remember those movements patterns haven't magically gotten better just because it's warm.

4. Recovery matters more than ever

Recovery is always really important... but in the winter you're much less likely to stay up really late eating questionable food from a BBQ and sinking 10,000 pints!
There's hot weather and holidays getting in the way of consistency all over the place but make sure you are eating enough to support your training and getting as much sleep as you can.

5. Make the most of outdoor training

It's summer and we're functional athletes! Get out there and use those muscles! Early morning run? Yes please! Paddle boarding? Yes please! Hiking through the countryside? Yes please! Just remember to stay out of direct sunlight where possible and ensure you have enough water for your activity!

Why back as early as 2003 (before some of our members were even born, lets not think about that) did the CrossFit Journal crown the clean as the 'king of all exercises'?

Well lets break it down shall we? Maybe grab a coffee or a protein shake and buckle up!

When performing a clean you use your hips and legs to pull the weight off the floor, and launch it up before dropping and pulling yourself underneath the bar to receive the bar at the bottom of a front squat before standing back up standing tall and proud with the bar on your shoulders. When done properly a clean is something to behold and feels great!

All 10 general physical skills are touched on when you improve your clean but we will talk more about those next week, It might be summer but school is in session!

Why the clean and not the sn**ch?

Don't get me or CrossFit wrong the sn**ch is really good, and even covers nearly all of the fitness qualities of the clean but the clean is more accessible. It's mobility requirements are much lower as it's a front squat vs an over head squat.

It also leads straight into the clean and jerk, I'm sure we would all agree that a C+J is the most efficient way to get heavy weight over your head?

If you have never read the CrossFit Journal Article 'The Clean' I would really recommend it. Even though it was written in 2003 it is still relevant and guaranteed to help you improve your clean and thus... your fitness! What helps you get through MURPH?

We've got some tips for you

-Pace that first run!
It shouldn't be a race, it shouldn't be a test for you PB mile time and there isn't a prize for being the first one back into the gym! You will not win this workout in the first mile but you can 100% loose the workout if you push too hard. We should be coming back into the gym feeling warm and ready to start attacking the reps straight away!

- Have a plan
How are you tackling this workout? Think about it before you get to the gym on the 25th, there are so many option depending on your skill set and your weaknesses!
Some examples,

100, 200, 300... not for the feint of heart! but if your pull ups are solid and you do pressups for breakfast then maybe you should give this challenge a try!

20 rounds of cindy (5,10,15) this is the go to for most people, it's where you should start it breaks things up and keeps the body moving

Im sh*t at press ups (5 press ups, 5 pull ups, 5 press ups, 15 squats) x20, as the name suggests, if you are going to need the break in the press ups there are ways to split them over a set. This one does require a little bit more brain power in tracking the reps and rounds.

- Stick to your plan
This is more improtant to hold you back in the first couple of rounds, it might only take you 30 seconds to complete your first round of cindy, but when was the last time you were able to complete chelsea or got over 20 rounds in cindy? Have a plan B in mind for if it all falls apart though!

- Second run FUN
The stumble to the door and towards starbucks is a right of passage, you are almost there! Don't worry those legs will start to move again properly before you make it to the main road! If they don't... come and tell me I'm wrong, you will have to try and catch me though!

-Mindset
Be happy with the small victories, one by one the workout will be taken down! Think about how much you've done, how well it's going for you. Do not get dishartened when you see other people leaving the gym for the last run but you're only half way through... the probably cheated!

Finally, The murph world record is 32:41... so go get them tiger!
