This October, Iโ€™m making mental wellbeing the focus of our morning yoga. ๐ŸŒฟ

Not because yoga is a cure for anxiety, stress or burnout โ€” it isnโ€™t. But movement, breathing, rest and meditation can give us useful ways to look after ourselves when life feels a bit too much.

Throughout ๐Œ๐ž๐ง๐ญ๐š๐ฅ ๐–๐ž๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ง๐ž๐ฌ๐ฌ ๐Œ๐จ๐ง๐ญ๐ก, our 30-minute weekday morning practices will explore different ways of supporting our mental wellbeing.

Weโ€™ll move, breathe, shake, stretch, strengthen, rest and occasionally simply stop.

Classes will include practices such as ๐…๐ฅ๐จ๐ฐ, ๐’๐ก๐š๐ค๐ž & ๐’๐ž๐ญ๐ญ๐ฅ๐ž, ๐๐ฎ๐ซ๐ง ๐Ž๐Ÿ๐Ÿ ๐’๐ญ๐ซ๐ž๐ฌ๐ฌ, ๐˜๐จ๐ ๐š ๐Ÿ๐จ๐ซ ๐๐ฎ๐ซ๐ง๐จ๐ฎ๐ญ and ๐‚๐จ๐ฉ๐ข๐ง๐  ๐’๐ญ๐ซ๐š๐ญ๐ž๐ ๐ข๐ž๐ฌ, alongside short meditations designed to complement what weโ€™ve been exploring on the mat.

October is Mental Wellness Month at JOY. For the whole month, my 7am morning yoga classes will focus on some of the things many of us struggle with in everyday life โ€” stress, anxiety, overwhelm, depleted energy and simply having too much going on in our heads. Yoga doesn't make the difficult thin....

Donald sent me this video the other day and said, โ€œYou'll like this"

He was right. I โค๏ธ it.

It's Vanja from VanjaMoves talking about something that sounds deceptively simple: ๐ฆ๐จ๐ฏ๐ข๐ง๐  ๐ฆ๐จ๐ซ๐ž ๐ข๐ง ๐จ๐ซ๐๐ข๐ง๐š๐ซ๐ฒ ๐ฅ๐ข๐Ÿ๐ž

Not another workout. Not trying to get fitter, stronger or more flexible. Just looking at all the little ways modern life has gradually removed movement from our day โ€” chairs, cars, lifts, convenience โ€” and putting some of it back.

As I watched it, I had the slightly strange realisation that I already do most of these things. (I don't have a hanging bar ....yet)
But it also raised some uncomfortable questions.

If you do yoga a few times a week โ€” or even every day โ€” but spend most of the rest of your life sitting down, ๐ข๐ฌ ๐ฒ๐จ๐ ๐š ๐š๐œ๐ญ๐ฎ๐š๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐ž๐ง๐จ๐ฎ๐ ๐ก?

I've been mulling that one over, and I've written about in tomorrow's blog.

For now, ๐–๐€๐“๐‚๐‡ this. It's well worth 24 minutes of your time. And I'd be interested to know what you make of it.

How do you know if youโ€™re getting better at yoga?

Can you touch your toes now? Hold a balance for longer? Finally do the pose that used to feel impossible?

Those things can certainly be signs of progress.

But perhaps progress is also noticing when youโ€™re holding your breath. Knowing when to back off. Becoming less bothered about what the person on the mat next to you is doing. Or actually understanding a little more about what youโ€™re practising โ€” and why.

Iโ€™ve been thinking about what โ€œgetting betterโ€ at yoga really means.

New on the blog ๐Ÿ‘‡

How do you know if youโ€™re getting better at yoga? It may have less to do with perfect poses than you think. Exploring progress, practice and what yoga can teach us.

Iโ€™ve always thought September feels more like a new year than January does.
New pens. New shoes. New routines. That slightly optimistic feeling that 'this year Iโ€™m going to be really organised.'

For twenty years, September in our house has meant someone going back to school.

But not this year.

And although I no longer need to buy PE kits or discover at 9pm that someone needs three black biros by tomorrow morning, I still feel that pull towards a fresh start.

So this weekโ€™s blog is about September, changing seasons, changing routines โ€” and why this might be a rather good time to begin again.

I went to a yoga class iin Brighton a couple of weeks a go and the teacher was wearing a t-shirt with a political slogam. It ruined the class for me.

It also made me think about whether politics has a place in a yoga class. I don't have the answer but this is what this weeks blog is all about.

Should politics have a place in a yoga class? A political slogan at a recent class left me wondering where yoga, personal beliefs and inclusivity meet.

Somewhere around mile 40 of a 50-mile bike ride, my 18-year-old son blew me away with a level of insight I wish I'd had at his age.

It became the starting point for this weekโ€™s blog โ€” about what quietly happens when you keep showing up.

If I'm going to live a long life I've given a lot of thought to the question 'what do I want to be able to do with it?'

Get up from the floor. Carry my own shopping. Walk for miles. Ride my bike. Swim in the sea. Travel. Climb a hill because I fancy seeing whatโ€™s at the top.

So much of what we call independence is actually physical.

And the loss of it can happen remarkably quietly.

This weekโ€™s blog is about ageing, movement and why looking after our strength, mobility and balance isn't really about fitness at all.

Itโ€™s about ๐Ÿ๐ซ๐ž๐ž๐๐จ๐ฆ.

Donald opened an old suitcase we'd planned to take to the charity shop.

Inside were thirteen pairs of my shoes.

I'd forgotten every single one.

The timing couldn't have been stranger because I'm currently reading 'Less' by Patrick Grant, a book about consumption, value and learning to distinguish between want and need.

The joke, unfortunately, is on me.

Except for one pair of outrageous bright pink boots bought in America more than twenty-five years ago...

Those are a different story.

The full blog is now on my website.
