Firstly, we would like to thank everyone who came down to support the team — it means a lot to all the players and staff. Your support throughout the cup run has been incredible and it was appreciated by everyone involved.
Burwash started the cup final quickly and were out of the blocks early, taking the lead through Jamie after a strong opening spell. Bexhill responded soon after when a ball over the top wasn’t fully dealt with, allowing their striker to sneak the finish in at the near post to make it 1-1.
Burwash regained the lead towards the end of the first half from a well-worked set piece. A dangerous free-kick delivery from Drew was met by Dan, whose header restored the advantage. However, Bexhill levelled once again with the final kick of the half, reacting quickest to a second ball from a corner to send the sides in level at 2-2.
Into the second half, Burwash created chances to take the lead for a third time but were unable to convert. Bexhill then took the lead for the first time in the game right at the death, scoring from another corner to make it 3-2.
Burwash threw everything at it in the closing minutes in search of an equaliser, but it wasn’t enough. It was a closely fought cup final, with Burwash ultimately undone by set pieces late in the game.
We would also like to congratulate Bexhill on a well-fought game and wish them all the best.
Although we fell at the final hurdle, we are immensely proud of every player involved. After years of jokes about “cup curses” — including a spell of three years without winning a single cup fixture — this group helped take the club to its first cup final in 11 years.
Considering we are a one-club village side made up of local lads, everyone connected with the club can be proud of what has been achieved this season.
