A busy Sunday for our Master Athletes, as 11 travelled to Nuneaton for the Midlands Masters Championships.

It was a very happy Claire Zawada as she won the Women 45 Hurdles in 14.5 for a club record. Then she was really bouncing after her 4th in the 100 metres in a new pb and club record of 13.84 and into a headwind. Graham Lamb finished strongly to win the M70 800 metres in 3.16.11 for a club record. Paul Edwards was 4th in the M65 200 metres in 31.26.

Greg Richards won the M50 100 metres in 12.55, then second in the 200 metres in 25.27.

Schools Endurance report

It was a very blustery Stoke for the Staffordshire Schools Championships.

Megan Cheetham was in a small mixed field in the 3 killometres. Already with the school’s entry standard in this event, she soon led the girl’s race. After two new bests this week, with the strong wind she focused on an easy controlled race to win in 10.40.5 to confirm her Mason’s trophy place.

In the year 7,800 metres race, Irina Laird ran well to finish in 2.57.7.

The junior girls race saw Alyssa Lindsay with a chance of a top 2 place. As the field bunched, she took the initiative and pulled ahead and opened a gap. On the home straight she got passed but took 2nd place and the Masons Trophy place with a new best of 2.38.4 . In the Junior boy’s race Jacob Manlove got into a good position in 2nd but as the pace speeded up, he got passed to finish 4th in 2.18.1. Oliver James in the intermediate boy’s race was up against it with 2 sub two minutes year 11s in the race. He battled hard but came home 7th in 2.11.2. Georgia Griffiths was hoping to get close to the England schools entry standard in the senior girls. A fast start saw her easily clear but the wind impacted her second lap as she won in 2.29.5.

In the 1500 metres Bea Newman was another with a chance of a Mason’s trophy place. With a fast girl storming away, Bea was in the third. After 500 metres she moved into 2nd, but with a girl tracking her. She couldn’t drop her and the girl attacked entering the home straight. Running shoulder to shoulder it was Bea’s determination that just got her the 2nd place in 5.13.2 for a new best and a Masons place.

Bea like Alyssa have both qualified for the Mason’s as year 8s a great achievement.

A strong field in the Intermediate boys race and the field soon stretched out. Morgan Fletcher was in third with Alec Tutt 5th. They both tried hard but could not close the gaps finishing in 4.17.9 and 4.27.8.

In the senior boys 2k steeple chase it was a fine second for Euan Hallows as he finished in 7.45.5.

Poor conditions also at Moorways, Derby with a strong wind making fast times at the Derbyshire Championships very unlikely. In the 1500 metres Jacob Dutton and Ewan Withnall were clear favourites in the junior and intermediate boys. Both took similar race strategies, not pushing the pace and executing a fast finish. Dutton winning the juniors in 4.31.36 and Withnall the intermediates in 4.15.81.

In the junior boys 800 metres Noah Hemmings was 7th in 2.33.28 as he struggled with the wind. Five were running in the combined senior and intermediate boy’s race. Unsurprisingly a clear win in the intermediates for Noah Wood in 1.59.54, the wind showing in his slowest time of the season. Theo Jones was next winning the seniors in 2.03.67. Then there was a close battle between Lewis Boyce and Myles Christopher that had to go to photofinish. Boyce taking silver with 2.09.32 to Christophers 2.09.33 with Noah Broadley 6th in 2.13.77.

The Loughborough BMC Grand Prix saw three Burton Athletes in action. The hopes of new bests looked remote though with a strong wind.

Henry Hemmings was in a confident mood after two succesive BMC race wins. When no one seemed keen to follow right behind the pacemaker, Hemmings took that place. Ahead at the bell he kept a good pace, with a challenge finally coming with 80 metres to go. He didnt panic and he responded to the attack and kept driving ahead to win in a new best of 1.50.15. Improving his under 18 club record and moving 4th in the rankings.

Maisie Trueman and Saffron Bowley were in the 1500 metres E race along with many of their Loughborough University training group. Trueman had been hoping to break 4.40 but thought it would be tough in the wind. This week had seen her club fastests ever time of 3.41.9, set in 2023, improved by Megan Cheethams to 4.38.6 on Wednesday. Bowley was pleased to be racing again after illness had interupted her training.

As the race started Trueman was in the middle of the field with Bowley just behind her. As the pace picked up the field split and three got away. Trueman moved to lead the second group, while Bowley was battling along. Come the last 500 metres, Trueman picked up her pace and worked her way to the leader. Flying past her on the home straight to win and smash her best by 9 seconds to 4.32.68. Setting a senior womens club record and reclaiming the clubs fastest female at 1500m. Bowley kept working hard to finish in 4.48.18 which was also a pb and a great return to racing.

Hemmings and Trueman were both interviewed after the race wins on the bmc instagram.

It was a welcome return for Burton AC to take part in the Washland Ladies Relays after a few years break. This event has grown in success each year and is as hard to get places as the London Marathon!
After initially not getting any places, Burton got allocated a team in a ballot and then two more teams as a few spaces opened up. With a lot of the endurance group running at the Loughborough BMC, it was a chance for the younger members of the endurance group to shine.
Burton entered three mixed teams of 4 runners, two under 14 teams and a vets team each of 2 females and 2 males.
Ernest Allen got the A under 14 team underway with 13.57 on the two mile course. Alyssa Lindsay leading off the B team with 15.08 and Annalisa Fabiano the Vets team with 19.02.
Bea Newman was on the second leg for the A team and ran really hard to finish in 13.16. A time that was the equal 7th fastest of the day for the 140 women runners! Zola Signori took the next leg in 14.51 and finally Riccardo Ferrero bought the team home in 13.02 for 26th pace.
Theo Mulenga was on leg 2 for the B team and finished in 14.19, Amelia Cawson then ran 14.47 and finally William Smith 14.47 for the team to come home 36th.
For the veteran’s team, Pete Wright ran 14.42, Joao Vieira de Jesus 16.24 and Antony Allen 17.06 with the team 57th.
When all the results were in Bea Newman had run the fastest under 17 female leg and the team on Newman, Ferrero, Signori and Allen had won the under 17 mixed team.
Thanks to Antony Allen and Annalisa Fabiano for running the teams on the night for the club. Great to see Trevor Sharpe there watching the races.

11/06/2026

A new record of 14 Burton Endurance runners took part in the latest Loughborough British Miles club meeting.
The rain had finished but the track was damp and the weather cold, so it was going to be a tough night for getting new bests.
First to run was Theo Jones in the 800 metres and he was looking to break the two-minute barrier. He took the lead on the second lap and opened a gap on the chasers. They tried to close on the home straight but he responded and came home in 1.59.89. The 4th under 18 to achieve the milestone this year.
Next race saw Henry Hemmings, Ewan Withnall and Noah Wood the other 3 sub 2 minute runners taking part in the A race. The faced Nicholas Landeau who had run in the 2022 Commonwealth games for Trinidad and Tobago and had run 1.47.84 last year. He took the lead from the pacemaker with Hemmings, Wood and Withnall behind him. As he increased his speed, he pulled Hemmings with him as the others dropped back. Hemmings bid his time and attacked on the home straight to win in 1.51.43. With Wood 1.53.51 and Withnall 1.53.86 further back with more sub 1.54 clocking’s.
Next race saw a 800 metres and club debut for Henry’s younger brother Noah on his birthday. Unfazed by the race he went off fast and led at the bell in 64 seconds. However, he then struggled to maintain the pace and came home in 2.24.71. A few more weeks of pacing work and he will smash that time.
Oliver James and Noah Broadley were next in action both going into the race with similar times. Janes committed and was in the top 4 with Broadley taking a steadier start. James kept working hard and came home in 2,08,40 for a seasons best and Broadley finished in 2.12.40 as they both got some practice in before the schools championships this weekend.
The last 800 metres saw Georgia Griffiths and Jacob Harmon and they both started fast. Harmon kept going well to come home in 2.13.08 for a new best while Griffiths fast early pace caught up with her on this occasion.
The 1500 metre races started with Morgan Fletcher and Aleksander Tutt both in action. As the field split Fletcher led the third group of 4 with Tutt at the back of it. On the last lap Tutt started closing Fletcher down and passed him and opened a small gap. With the finish in sight Morgan picked up his pace to pass Tutt to finish 9th in 4.17.73 with Tutt next in 4.19.16 for a new best.
Jacob Dutton looked to be in a tough 1500 B race with the pacing set for a 4 minute run. 14 seconds faster than he had run. As the field spread out, he was last but one in the 14-runner field. He didn’t panic but kept in touch with the back of the field and as he got the bell he picked up his pace to move up to 7th in a new best of 4.10.34.
Charlotte Nettleton in her race also found her self to the back of the field in her race. She kept determined and worked hard to come home in a season’s best of 5.02.39.
Last race saw Megan Cheetham again in a tough race and she started strongly. As the pace increased, she was in the large second group with seven runners battling for potion. With a much-improved arm action she started to move through the field from the bell coming home in 4.38.6 for a new best and the fastest time for a 1500 metres by a Burton women ever!

As always, a massive thank you to the officials who gave up their time to help. We really appreciate it as many don’t have children taken part. Three Burton athletes travelled to Loughborough for the British Milers Club pb classic.

First to run was Megan Cheetham in the 3 kilometres. After a successful debut in the Burton Club championships at the distance, where she had been paced by Callum Aberely and achieved the english schools entry standard, this was a different challenge. Here the pacemaker was aiming for 9.45, while Megan was looking to try and break the 10 minute barrier. As the race started Cheetham made the decision to not go with the pacemaker but found another runner to follow who pace was nearer to what she wanted. With one kilometer to go, the pace dropped and Cheetham made her move and accelerated. Moving into third she began to chase down the girl in second. She caught her at the bell and led a group of 3 on the last lap. Cheetham tried hard but couldn''t drop them and just got passed on the home straight but her fine run was rewarded with a new best of 10.03.05 improving her u16 club record. This keeps her 9th in the 3k u16 rankings.

Noah Wood found himself the fastest runner entered in the 800 metres by a few hundredths from a Welsh runner. A fast opening lap saw him on the shoulder of the Welsh runner after the pace maker had dropped out. With 250 metres to go he took the lead and opened a gap. Taking a 3 metre gap going into the last 100 metres but he couldn't hold on taking 2nd in 1.53.32. His second fastest time and a good result on his first race on this track.

Georgia Griffiths was next to run in the 800 metres, looking for a time to help her England schools selection chances. In a race where she was the fastest it was clear she would have to try and force the pace for a fast time. So she kept close to the pacemaker and following a 64 second opening lap, she took the lead. Slowing slightly in the next 150 metres another girl came onto her shoulder. Griffiths held her off and then opened a gap to come home in 2.15.75 for a season's best and a new u18 club record. She will be hoping for another fast race to achieve the senior girls entry standard of 2.14.

Wednesday sees another Loughborough BMC meeting with at least 11 Burton runners taking part and next Saturday the Loughborough BMC Grand Prix where three will be looking for international qualifying times.
