World Cup superstition… or football truth?

No foreign head coach has ever won the FIFA Men’s World Cup.

Every champion so far has been led by a coach from the same country.

Maybe it is just a statistic.
Maybe it is a superstition.
Or maybe it shows something deeper about international football:

Culture.
Identity.
Language.
Connection.
Understanding the emotional rhythm of a nation.

The 2026 World Cup may give us another answer.

Being a GK coach is about more than teaching saves.

Yes, we help goalkeepers improve technically and tactically.

But our role goes far beyond the pitch.

We develop people.
We support them through challenges.
We inspire belief.
We create environments where they can grow.

Sometimes the biggest impact we make is not a save, a session, or a result.

It is helping a player become more confident, more resilient, and better prepared for life.

At its heart, goalkeeping coaching is about people.

As the season comes closer to the end in many countries,
I always think about one thing.

Football moves fast.

Players move.
Coaches move.
Staff change.

Sometimes projects continue. Sometimes they disappear overnight.

But every season leaves something behind.

A lesson. A relationship. A difficult moment. A small improvement nobody else noticed.

Working in different countries taught me that football may look different depending on the culture,but the emotions at the end of a season are often very similar.

Reflection matters.

Because the next season often starts before we fully understand the previous one.

Shot stopping is not only about the save.
In the game, the goalkeeper must read movement, adjust position, set, and then react.

That is why I like to include combination play before the final shot.

Question for coaches:

Do you prefer isolated shooting practice, or do you add combination play before the finish?

And how many coaching points are there?

Modern goalkeeping has become more technical and tactical,
but this kind of mentality should never disappear.

Revisiting some old FA goalkeeper coaching notes today.

Years pass, trends change, but the basics still matter:

Position. Timing. Decision making. Courage. Recovery.

All the diving technics will be come with the proper positioning timing and the first step to dive.

Diving to the ball in 1 v 1 could be challenging but it’s also timing of diving to the ball from hand not legs.

Good coaching principles tend to survive time.

The “W” and the “Cup” are simply two answers to different situations.

The key is the goalkeeper’s starting position, movement into line, balance at set, and the decision of which technique the moment demands.

Clean catching usually starts before the ball arrives.

Old notes, from the FA when I was on the goalkeeping B license course about 13 years ago… now it’s UEFA goalkeeping B license… but the fundamentals never change in goal keeping 🙌

Goalkeeping technique is not about looking clean.
It is about being ready to solve the problem.

The set position influences balance, timing and movement before the shot.
The scoop technique helps turn a dangerous moment into control.

Good goalkeeping often starts before the save and is judged after the contact.

✅ FIRST TEAM: AFC Pro License
✅ TEAM B U-23: AFC Pro License
✅ U-21: AFC A License
✅ Youth Sectors U-14 to U-18: AFC A License
✅ Grassroots U-10 to U-13: AFC B License
